Motorway lane closures

With one or more red flashing lights to indicate a lane is closed, why do car drivers try their luck and dive in at last minute, i have seen this many times where they can not adjust their speed and wait to join the line of traffic that has obeyed the red lights.
Has anyone noticed there seem to more car drivers doodling and it seems unsafe driving by their antics of saving their fuel.

It’s not just car drivers, there are drivers of all types of vehicles do it, and yest it does cause problems.

With refereance to this, I’ve just read in our monthly blurb, that a spare police patrol (don’t see many of these!) sat on a perch prior to an incident where the signals had been set for lane closures (ie red 'X’s) and finished up sending out 150+ fixed penalties to those that ignored the red 'X’s. I hope that more police patrols would do the same.

The real Biffo:

me too, its very dangerous to ignore those reds.
i think its partly they don’t believe what the signs tell them, then a mix of not even seeing the signs, or just pushing their luck :smiling_imp:
had a blinder the other night, lanes 1 and 2, of 3, were shut for works, plenty of warning, and signs indicating this.
at the 800 board i drifted into the middle, then just after the 600 board, drifted into the right hand lane, to then watch a car, drop down a gear and nail it pass me and a truck in front, to then swerve in last minute.
this was i guess, out and out ignorance.

It happens all the time, I don’t think that it’s ignorance of the law, but just ignorant behaviour. There is a growing minority of drivers that don’t believe the rules apply to them, so they ignore those that don’t suite them.
I’ve just watched traffic approaching a lane 2 & 3 roadworks closure, lots of traffic queuing in lane 1, but a growing number of vehicles passing down lanes 2 & 3 (closed lanes 4/500 yda prior the taper) then they push in right at the cones, making lane 1 stop for each vehicle that pushes in.
If they’d have joined lane 1 prior to the closure signals, then the traffic would keep going, and would be faster as no-one has to stop to let the knobheads in.

They are on far too early before the accident thus causing unnecessary congestion further down the carriageway instead of utilising all the lanes up to the accident to its full volume.

i think its safe to ignore them around 9 or 10 pm
as the lanes are closed for roadworks
the red x flashing signs above the lanes are on
but the slow workforce are so slow
they havent coned off the lanes yet

Because car drivers are far more important than us common wagon drivers.

How dare you question them trying to get ahead of you, they might be held up for a couple of minutes.
You should all slow down on the approach to the lane closures and only move into the open lane when you are sure you wont inconveniance any one in a car.

It’s because they are a bunch of window lickers.

agreed
just had a big discussion on another site, (cars) and alot were saying that congestion in the m orning and evening rush was a joke, and it was mainly due to lorries, and lorries elephant racing :unamused:
i’m not a fan of those that do the whole limiter racing thing, side by side, mile after mile, no need for it and it gives us all a bad name. but if you saw the drivel that some idiots were posting you’d have laughed.
1 suggested that everyday between 6-9am and 4-7pm, all lorries should be banned from the roads to ease commuters journeys into work in their cars :unamused: another said ALL freight should only move at night, and it went on, and on.
the old, “stick it all on the railways” was dragged out aswell :unamused:

I have read that the MI will have the hard shoulder used as a live lane, it works ok, look at the M42, job done. :sunglasses:
