Most powerful Truck engine

I was having a conversation today with regard the history of horsepower in European factory production trucks.
I’m quite happy with 1970 early 80’s motors but things seem to get a little blurred
after then.

Scania 140 350hp 1969
Scania 141 375hp 1975
Scania 142 388hp 1981
Scania 142 420hp 1982 Intercooled
MAN 460hp 1986
Scania 143 500hp 1991
MAN 680hp 2001
Volvo F16 700hp 2008
Scania 730hp 2009 16.4 litre.

I am not 100% sure about the 460 MAN date but I know one rattled my doors
in Germany around 1986.I knew it was a 460 as they had a huge tailpipe exiting
from under the fuel tank.

Could any one else add relevant dates and HP levels.

Didnt the Swedes use different power ratings in the 60s and 70`s to us? I think the V8 AEC in its top power rating was around 272bhp

Good evening 14TOO,

I had a MAN 40.400 in 1981, so I guess that was one of the first big engined Germans!! (and not a Swede!_

Possible missing leaders in the BHP race are merc sk 440/480, volvo f16 470, renault magnum(mack v8) 500/520, and the 480 iveco turbostar/ 520 eurostar.

Then you have skipped 144 530, 164 580, fh16 610, and actros 610.01  .

Could be this one…

Lots of possibilities there but have you any dates to put them order in the table.

Wasnt sure when the 420 was out, thought about the same time as intercooled 142 so never included it, and 480 wasnt sure if it was before or after 480 merc?

I drove a 480 Turbostar in 89 quite a few times that was on a G plate it was a real puller no speed limiters then

MAN v10 600hp-1996
MAN v10 660 hp in 2002, but only for heavy haul (41.660)
2007-MAN V8 680 ps

The ■■■■■■■ 335 normally aspirated or 380 turbo charged was fitted in Scammells mid 60s ( E plate ) and MAN V10 400 fitted in the mid 70s were both the highest powered engines when they came out. The continental manufacturers did used a different system to work out net bph to British engine manufacturers and they used show it in brackets on advertising stuff as slightly less than the British Standard system used over here.
