Went to Bestway Newcastle under Lyme yesterday and for 26 pallets including all paperwork I was in and out in 24 minutes. That’s epic. And today I’m at Bidfood Worcester. New place , I’m early as my first tip was 0300 unfortunately in Smethwick. So I got here early for an 0630 tip. Goes into office guy tells me goods in is 2 doors down. Fine I go 2 doors down, I’m early so I’ve got to ask. Been stood 30 minutes and another driver says to me “why you here”? I told him why and he says they don’t come in till 6. Why didn’t the idiot in the first office say that. The night shift only load their motors. Just and easy communication at the first office would have let me go to my 3rd tip and get back for this one. Grrrrrrr What’s the best and worst you folks have had.
Worst or best depending on point of view
10 am collecting Glasgow got there told stuff not ready your day early..
After hour of phone calls was told your just have wait to tomorrow then.
Were pay you days pay. Put you in hotel. So stayed at hotel near theme park at bells hill as could park truck outside there got bus went round Glasgow.
Went back next got told stuff is at our sister site about. 30 miles away ..so went there fella said been waiting for this be collected for about a week.
Was some fabrication stuff stored outside could tell been there a while
During the construction of (Brisbane) Expo 88, if any of you went, did you notice the pastel coloured, dead gum trees around the perimeter of the site?
I carted those trees, they were over-height, over-length and over-width.
The monorail was too low to get the trees under, so it was decided that the trees would be taken to a little used, river wharf, barged around, lifted over the monorail and placed with a mobile crane on site. There were six trucks and escort/pilots on the job. Each truck required a pilot in front and escort at the back, on the way to the wharf. The cars would leave to race back and bring the next truck in, while we unloaded. This operation took three days complete, from the transport point of view.
About two weeks later we had to undo the whole operation, because the trees were in the way ofcranes trying to place smaller but live trees.
Of course, we still had to run through the process again to achieve the the original aim.
Expo was an absolute gold mine for me, thanks to the total lack of any idea from all the project managers.
This receiving company have not been inefficient at all. The inefficiency was your company routing you there when the place was closed for reception. If you are sending goods somewhere, checking on their opening times is pretty basic.
Warehouses etc are there to warehouse stuff. They are not there with the express aim of making haulage companies efficient. That is the job of hauliers.
It would have been much nicer if the warehouse office had said “delivery is across there, and they open at 6hr30”.
I also doubt that warehouse staff would be aware that you had other drops on your truck. Not their concern.
The dispatching office, unless they were actively lied to, carry all the blame for any waste.
That is exactly what your bosses should have done. Found out all the details, and arranged efficient use of your time. They decide where and when trucks move, not FLT drivers etc.
Firstly we the company had no problem being early, I was on about standing there for 30 minutes when the guy in the first office knows the staff don’t manage the desk till 6. My 3rd drop was 20 minutes away and an open booking so could have tipped that then come back. I think you’re maybe finding a problem for any solution. I’m now starting to live in your head rent free. Always so negative. One day you’ll have something positive to say.. Keep watching the screen folks we all know how this ends
Maybe you should have told us about your most efficient/ Inefficient tip like everyone else has. That’s what the thread is about. Always hijacking.
That is some big job. I suppose when there’s big money at stake, big money is spent.
Yes. So why didn’t you? Because you did not know what time the 2nd place opened to receive goods.
You did not know because? Your transport office did not find out. They took a guess and got it wrong.
If you want only praise and agreement go somewhere else.
I will give my opinion on things. I have done so without any personal abuse or comments on your character. If you think I have been abusive or unfair, then report to the moderators.
Except of course the example you gave is not about inefficient unloading etc, it is about inefficient traffic management. You were routed to a drop too early.
If done by your office before you left that would have been the most efficient way to go, wouldn’t it?
Living in your head
The most efficient way of doing things I came across was when we were given muti-collections. The list was ordered as the shortest route, but all collections had opening times, and phone numbers included.
We were free to trade off doing a longer distance and avoiding awkward opening times. More fuel going further to get to an early closing site meant saving much more in time.
And sometimes checking goods were ready on the phone, and giving an ETA meant a much quicker turnaround for both us and the loaders. They could get set up at their own pace and get paperwork ready in advance.
Rent free all day long
Which is why I suggested that they indeed should determine what he opening hours of the 2nd drop are. Their failure to find out the opening hours led to the inefficiency.
I think it seems quite clear what I am saying here. Or am I explaining it poorly?
If the transport (your) office had done their job properly, they would not have sent you to a drop not open to receive.
In your head twenty four seven
Well that is 3 posts from you talking about me.

No further comment about the efficiency of determining the opening times of depots before planning a journey?
In your head tonight and tomorrow
Jeeeesus! That escalated quickly! ![]()
