Hi all

Morrisons are building a new RDC @ J23 M5 which is near me, rumour has it they are looking for 600 drivers :astonished: . So what are they like to work for pay etc, Im tramping at the mo and want to spend more time with my kids. Cheers for the info

I think this is out in the open now and no longer sensitive info.Morrisons to be part operational in Oct 2011 fully Jan 2012. Approx 200 drivers. DHL have the contract. Closing Swindon,Yate,Droitwich and Willand depots.
(Rumour has it from Langdon drivers who attended presentation. days £22000 every 12th full weekend off Work rota over 12 weeks.) This in brackets cannot be verified as true perhaps a Langdons driver can help here.
At present this is how it is. If you wish to be treated like a child then this is for you.No unloading at all because all breaks must be taken on a bay or at a Morrisons depot. No stopping at any other place except of course a ciggie or toilet. Any stop over 15mins other than bay or depot must be explained on return to depot and an incident sheet signed off.You will sign many sheets of paper with DHL so they can screw you when you get it wrong.
Strange rotas with single days off eg; 5 work 1 off 4 work 2 off 3work 1 off etc No hols to be taken 1st Dec to 5th Jan apart from the 3 obvious. Same week before and week after Easter.21 days hols plus b/h’s.
You are monitored by sat tracking which also monitors idling time, harsh braking, fuel economy, use of cruise control and kms per hour driving.Woe betide you if you dont meet the ave requirements.
Day cabs with no night heaters, great when sitting on a bay for 2 hours in January-which you will do! shops dont care how long it takes to unload. No air con in summer just open the windows and peel flies off your face and bees from under you shirt collar as you go.Fully auto gearbox wih no manual override drives you mad .Trucks known to have stopped on steep hills when g/box gets confused.
You only know your work for the day when you arrive for duty it may be 9hours or 13 hours hope you dont have anything arranged for later.
If you dont believe this then ask a DHL/Morrisons driver if you can find one stopped long enough.

Does anyone know if DHL take on newbies. This RDC is 8 miles down the road from me and by Jan 2012 I will have had Cat C for 14 months and hopefully have my CE this summer.

They were quite happy to take East Euro drivers with debatable driving experience and I know they have taken one newbie at my depot. If you have had experience on Cat 3 then that is experience enough. You WILL have an assessment before being taken on anyway-just pass that. I can see them struggling to get drivers as very very few if any will be transferring from the old to the new depot. I know of no-one.
Ther will be no Cat 3 work as they dont use rigids.

Bear in mind and maybe I am getting long in the tooth now after 36 years driving. Working for DHL has been the worst job I have ever had and only my laziness has stopped me from moving on and perhaps because I have known that this would end in 3 years as it will have by Xmas. 9 out of ten drivers at my depot would say the same.

Thanks for the input YardDog. I will definitely look out for the recruitment drive as it may be the first rung that I need.

I worked out of the Droitwich RDC, about three years ago, on agency, and it is exactly how YARDDOG describes it. I got that bored by it that I went straight back into general haulage for some excitement!!!

Bob

wont miss tipping Yate what a pain in the ■■■

If you want to come off tramping to have more time at home, RDC work has got to be some of the best jobs going. Comparing to the bog standard haulage companies the supermarkets have better wages, better pension schemes, sick pay, holiday pay, and no doubt better working hours and a lot less stress.
I went from 2 years driving for Owens to work for Tesco in Magor. I thought I had come to heaven

not everyone thinks like that jo, i’d rather general haulage any day than supermarkets. in fact im starting this morning at asda and cant stand it. all the petty rules you cant do this cant do that same old runs everydays and as for the spotty oiks in stores that think there better than you… no give me general anyday.

Crikey JD how many jobs you had since f.liner serious case of itchy feet??

somerfields at huntworth is shutting in august with all been made redundant all the warehouse staff use the manhatten picking system and driver delivering mdt and what i have heard is that morrisons are going to or already use that system ( could be wrong as its only what i have heard ) so the guys and gals in somerfield seem to think they all could move lock stock and barrow to morrisons cause they are a ready made team just changing location !!

‘if you do get the job,can you make sure you strap the pallets of biscuits,im sick and tired[shortcake today] of opening morrisons packets of biscuits and finding them in bits :unamused: :imp: :imp: :imp:

I think you’ll find Addy it’s the scroats from school bashing the crisps/bisquits and shaking the pop bottles as they create havoc in the isles at our local Morrisons during dinner times! :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp:
