Moronic newbie question about hours and breaks

Afterevening peoples

Tomorrow I start a new job with an events company driving a Class 1 with the staging/PA and lighting for a Frankie Valli and The 4 Seasons tribute show. I’ve seen the shedule for the rest of the year upto December, most of the dates are almost a week apart but with a few 3 day runs and a 5 day run.

Having looked at the dates I’ve been racking my brain as to how the last driver worked in his breaks and daily rests
The whole show runs to an intinerary, truck has to be at the venues between 13:30 and 14:00 pm oclock on every date.
Driver oversees unloading, helps with get in and thats it until I oversee the Loading at the end.
Show supposedly finishes between 21:45 and 22:15

Tomorrow the shift starts at 10:30. I leave Raglan Castle for Yeovil to be there for 13:30 (152 miles)
Show in Yeovil finishes then drive to the Hilton, Basingstoke for a stopover (Jnc 4, M3, 82 miles, hour and half driving ish)
From there to The Camberly Theatre, again for 13:30-14:00 (18 miles, half hour ish driving) show finshes and loading…
From there to Travelodge, Reading services westbound (45 mins driving) for the final daily rest then bimble home

I’m still green around the gills with class 1 only having my licence 18 months and majority of work was big blue supermarket lorries
So ten hour average shifts with more than enough rest in between twas a doddle but this is doing my head in trying to figure out how to stay legal.

I’m more than likely thinking the wrong way. These are my thoughts
Start Raglan 10:30, arrive Yeovil 13:30. Crew turn up and unload and get in by 15:00.
I could go onto POA at that time until I oversee unloading and go till 01:30 to hopefully get to the hotel before my hours are up.
OR…I could go onto break at 15:00 for nine hours which takes me to midnight. Start another shift, make sure the loading is coolio and drive hour and half to Hotel for 2am and pop it on break again till 13:00, drive half hour to Camberly, unload, get in and Pop it on break again till Midnight and hopefully bimble back to Raglan…>>>>Is that paragraph legal?<<<<<

The next run of shows after these two are,
Raglan to Grantham (show)
Grantham to Bromley (show)
Bromley to Brighton (show)
Home

From your professional and knowledgable point of view…Is it do-able?
A 1000 apologies for length and boringness

On EU hours, you can start a new shift after a 9 hour break, but only if:

  • you take that 9 hour break as a reduced daily rest, which you can only do 3 times between weekly rest periods, or
  • you have taken a 3 hour break at some point earlier in your day, in which case the 3 and 9 hour breaks are a split daily rest (no limit on how many times a week you do this)

Does that help any?

Yes it does kind of, Thankyou but…
How often can you perform a split daily rest between weekly rests?

I might have just figured it out…maybe

Could I start at 10:30
Work/Drive till 15:30 (5 hours)
Break till 20:30 (5 hours)
POA/work/drive till 02:30 (6 hours)
Break till 12:45 (ten and quarter)
Start new shift… ?

There is no limit on the number of split daily rests you take, but you must complete all the rest that makes up whatever sort of daily rest you are going to count for that day before you reach 24 hours from the start of shift.

You start work at 1030 on the first day. This means the latest you can start you daily break is 0130, giving you at least 9 hours of break by 1030 (your suggestion to go on break at 0230 cannot work, as you cannot complete a daily rest by 1030 on the second day). If you manage to take 3 hours of break earlier in the day, a 9 hours break completes a split daily rest. If you didn’t manage 3 hours of break earlier in the day, the 9 hours will be one of the three reduced daily rest periods you are allowed in between weekly rest period unless you went on break in time to complete at least 11 hours break and take a normal daily rest by 1030.

The problem you’re giving yourself is the 1030 start, as that mandates you go on break no later than 0130 the following day. If you need more latitude in the end time of this driving day, you have to start the shift later. For example, if you need to keep driving until 0200, you cannot start the shift until 1100 (which would be the earliest you can start your daily checks as Other Work).

I guess the 1030 is fixed, in which case you might land up having to start your break before reaching Basingstoke. You will then have to start your second shift from wherever you reached, trying to choose a start time that gets you to Camberley on time and will allow you to get to Reading before having to start your daily break on the second night.

Whether you finish up taking a normal daily rest, reduced daily rest or split daily rest, you can arrange your driving time as you like so long as you take a 45 minute break (which can be split into two breaks, the first of at least 15 minutes and the second of at least 30 minutes) before reaching 4.5 hours of driving time. Whenever you take a 45 or complete a 15/30, the 4.5 hour driving time clock restarts. This means you have 4.5 hours of driving time available after the 3 hours of a split daily rest.

The final complication is ensuring your breaks meet the requirements of the Working Time directive.
