More positive PR for the industry

There may be more to this than meets the eye, but it’s no wonder the public have such a negative view of haulage when things like this get in the paper -

Well, it is a bit naughty…

Road chiefs targeted the vehicle because of the unusual way it was moving on the road and were shocked to discover one wheel on the trailer did not have a single wheel nut holding it in place.

is the truck in the pic the actual truck?
the trailer in the pic will have 10 stud wheels fitted so where did the other 2 go?
8 stud trailer wheels will be much smaller in size, i know this is splitting hairs but just shows how these things get reported to joe public!
could the same road chiefs show a pic of the actual 8 stud wheel in question?
i dont doubt the truck was an accident waiting to happen, but can the fact’s not get in the way of a good story!!!

But placing electromagnets on the gearbox disables the spy in the cab technology — allowing the drivers to flout the law. It also disables the anti-lock brakes, the speedometer and speed limiter, which stops lorries going above 60mph.

This has prompted safety fears about tired truckers on the expressway.

60mph■■?
journalism at its best again. :unamused:

And he doesn’t seem to know the difference between a magnet and an electromagnet.

Magnets on gearbox? - Never seen the tacho device down there?! :open_mouth:
Electromagnets at that - which need to be plugged in right?
There’s no such thing as “Hypochlorite”, so presumably we’re talking bathroom bleach which is Sodium Hypochlorite. :grimacing:
I’ve yet to see a speed limiter set at 60mph either!
…and what’s all this about disabling the brakes■■?

A big crock of....jpg

The lot of it - prima facie of course!

Not the tacho head, no, but the speed sender from the gearbox is on the… errrr… gearbox.

Is that a P&O Ferrymaster Trailer? I know the condition some of those that come in is bad but never heard of this before.

Don’t know what all the fuss is about ■■ I thought the wheel was designed to be held on by 2 nutts, and that they kindly provided 8 loose ones as spares ■■

Do I need to do a cpc session ■■

Hypochlorites are the salts of hypochlorous acid. Common examples include sodium hypochlorite (chlorine bleach or bleaching agent) and calcium hypochlorite (bleaching powder or swimming pool chlorination compound). Hypochlorites are frequently quite unstable – for example, sodium hypochlorite is not available as a solid, since removal of the water from NaClO solution converts it to a mixture of sodium chloride and sodium chlorate. Heating of NaClO solution also causes this reaction. Hypochlorites decompose in sunlight, giving chlorides and oxygen.
Due to their low stability, hypochlorites are very strong oxidizing agents. They react with many organic and inorganic compounds. Reaction with organic compounds is very exothermic and may cause ignition, so hypochlorites should be handled with care. They can oxidize manganese compounds, converting them to permanganates.

Nothing to worry about then…

And disabling the speed sender by putting a magnet on the gearbox can disrupt the ABS…the truck needs to work out how fast it is going to apportion braking effort.

ABS works off wheel speed sensors

Indeed it does, but I believe that an input from the speed sensor is used to establish the speed of the vehicle to help determine the braking effort required, further input as to the vehicle’s weight is calculated using input from the engine ECU which works out how much effort was required to accelerate it up to given speeds. These values are part of a complex algorithm which the truck uses to manage its braking, automated gearchanging and other functions. If the truck thinks it’s parked when it’s really doing 56 mph, it won’t always get the sums right.

Well if a speed sensor goes pop you can still drive the motor home so I’m guessing it copes OK :sunglasses:

Can’t wait for that article to be re-hashed in the Daily Hatemail. The copy is poorly written, sensationalist hyperbole for the most part.

I can never understand why people worry about “industry image”. If we’re as vital as everybody says we are, why do we feel the need to worry about image?

I’m not being flippant, really. Am I alone in thinking this?

Didn’t say it wouldn’t…otherwise there’s little point in the magnet trick.

Point I was trying to make is that the magnet trick can do more then disable the tacho & speed limiter.

As trucks become more and more sophisticated, the more these various systems become interdependent, and playing with one impacts on others.

VOSA is so well up on the magnet trick now there seems little point in thinking you can get away with it…plus it’s often prison if you get caught.

Digi tachos are soon going to have a secondary motion sensor which will record if the magnet trick is attempted.

A “SHOCKINGLY” defective HGV carrying corrosive and highly flammable goods was halted close to the A55.

The truck — laden with kerosene and hypochlorite — was pulled in for a check last week on the A494 at Deeside as it headed for Holyhead port.

Thats ■■■■■■■ class lol.

Remember when you had to remove the ABS fuses to have a wire on the … . … (I’m thinking of the children here by not wanting to influence them  ) otherwise it disrupted the ECU?

I had one for years, never had a problem with the ABS. Admittedly, because it didn’t work on any of the trailers either…

Ran it the length and breadth of Europe and I’m still alive.

You’re not wrong there mate, Bertie Smalls would be proud of some of the replies to the “would you squeal” thread! :open_mouth: Front bottoms.

they already have.
in fact, the motion sensor they have started using has been in place for a very long time. they just havn’t used it in conjunction with the tachograph until now.
it takes them so long to introduce things. most are ready and waiting to screw it up.
