Rob, there is a few on here who remember what it was like to have a cab full of A-Z’s. To think that it is better to have that than a small electronic box on the dash is ■■■■■■■■. So much safer to have the same information with audio in your peripheral vision than holding a well-thumbed A-Z to your face whilst driving in an area you don’t know.
The bigger issue about sat-nav is whether the driver uses it as a tool to guide him in situations where he is unsure of the route/turn-off, or whether he uses it to guide him through his day. To follow it blindly without being aware of road signage and what your own eyes tell you - and to follow its instructions implicitly is just madness. It is the difference between driving dynamically and fully engaged in what you are doing, i.e like a professional, or driving passively and being led by the nose by a box. Which leads to the nonsense that makes good you-tube vids.

Yeh I agree about the A to Z point, I chucked all mine years ago.
I do use a sat nav as a guide, and truthfully would not be without it now (despite driving for years without one) However I wouldn’t be ■■■■ ing myself, as some on here give the impression, if ever it wouldn’t work one week.
Your point about following it blindly, as a lot do, I reckon the more advanced they are, by pointing out all potential hazards etc, thus taking away the need for common sense and decisions, the more likely it would make some of them to follow it blindly, creating the you tube situations that you mention.
Agree with the old un…Robroy that is…
Janos you make good points about the difference in use too.
The sat nav is a ■■■■ good bit of kit, viewed as it should be as a pocket sized street map and a useful aid during a journey for spotting hidden or ill signed roads junctions and turn offs (and for early warning of hidden scameras)…at those jobs its the dogs danglers.
Where this goes wrong is where drivers allow the thing to plan their route for them and then follow it blindly, you the lorry driver plan your route and use the sat nav as and when it might help you, you never but never rely on it to do your job for you…if someone in a Micra follows the things advice and ends up in a farmers field or cliff edge its one thing, when it happens to a fully loaded lorry it can be a job ending disaster.
I use, a sat nave, have done for years, however the thought of the GPS system crashing doesn’t worry me as I’d just go back to how I did it years ago.
Having said that I do find it sooooo easy to be reliant on the thing, just wait 'till next time someone asks you for directions to a place your nav has taken you to numerous times! Your mind will go blank.

Old un ■■ Juddian you cheeky git.
You’re only as old as the woman you feel, and my Mrs is 8 yrs younger than me.
Still 30 in my head. Until I try and JUMP up on back of my trailer as I used to…then reality kicks in.
btw .Still laughing about the guy who asked ‘is it possible to run map only’ or do you need a sat nav , the answer given as ‘no’ made me bang me head against the bloody door in despair.
