There was a good one in our local rag the other week. Local councillor - I think his name is Richard Head teamed up with local primary school headmaster to campaign about a local detour used by high-sided trucks in order to avoid a low rail bridge on a main A-road. Their masterplan, to get the trucks to detour the detour…drop the speed limit on the B-road from 60mph to 40mph…this quote R. Head “will encourage haulage companies to go via the A1” - which is at least an extra 15-20 mile detour & around an hour extra in time…Hmmn - can’t see the haulage companies asking their drivers to ‘use A1’!!!
I pointed this out along with the fact that the B-road already IS a 40mph speed limit for trucks!!! I also suggested the councillor & headmaster should learn their Highway Code…maybe THEY should attend DCPC training…makes you sick. They should stick to attending meetings & stop spouting on issues they know nothing about!!!
Reminds me of when I used to work for Safeway. They built a new store on the site of the old Alvis works in coventry. We used to do night deliveries there. Then, the developers built a housing estate around it & pretty soon we had an injunction against us which meant no more night deliveries. Then they started complaining about congestion caused by delivering during the day!
When a complaint like this is made, all trucks to the area should be stopped for two weeks. No exceptions.
They would wake up rapidly…
Especially if there was a fire…
‘The school is on fire sir?’ I’m sorry sir but trucks aren’t allowed in Ferndown any more as the locals have complained about them. Fire engines are trucks so therefore we won’t be able to send the fire brigade in to put your fire out. You can’t even use a bucket and hose because there are no deliveries to the shops any more as trucks aren’t allowed in Ferndown any more sir. No, sorry, no fire engines, we’ll just be sending a couple of firemen in a Nissan Micra with a couple of buckets. Hope that’s OK for you sir. Never mind sir, the local school is burning to the ground but at least there are no nasty, smelly trucks in Ferndown sir…have a nice day sir’…
People in the uk have never accepted the hgv and never will, dont ask me why because I don’t know. The thing is the rest of Europe don’t seem to have a problem do they, driving and facilities over there are great.
regards dave

Numbies have to pay in the long run. They set up a weight limit and trucks have to waste fuel on a diversion.
The cost of delivery will have to factor in the fuel cost and time cost…
If you drop off a pallet to Jeremy Irons charge him the fuel.
Went to Tossco the other night, got to milk section and none of my usual 2 pint full fat milk ( I'm not fat by the way). Looked and looked, but all they had was a massive 4 pinter. I thought wtf, I am going to have to buy this and carry it all the way to my car, lol. Anyway, coming out of the car park, I looked in the other entrance of Tosscos and there was Mr Big Truck, then thought, ahhhhhhh, my milk might be on there.
So, moral of story without waffling on is - Yes, you ARE appreciated more than you might perhaps think ( as long as you don't come thundering past my house, lol) :stuck_out_tongue:

I looked this place up on Google Earth to view the two roads mentioned, The A31 & A348. There’s something they forgot to mention, to get from the A31 to the A348 you have to go along the A347, which just happens to have big houses (some with pools) with big gardens bordering the A347, could this be the REAL reason why they are moaning.
Every town\city and village in France has a ring road or by pass for poids lourds which means heavy weight.
Years ago two Adr or fuel or chemical trucks collided in a small village.
The road was only wide enough for one truck to pass through.
It seems there was some road rage and they crashed resulting in an explosion and fatalities of residents.
Since then they built suitable routes for transit traffic.
In the Uk most roads go through a centre.Look at Salisbury.A nightmare in holiday season with coastal traffic and jams.
Batheaston bypass in Bath. What did that solve.?Bath still gets gridlocked.Nimbies rejected a bus that could run on a train track like a tram.
In Burgos in Spain they reduced the toll price on the motorway to get trucks to use it as a bypass to Miranda del Ebro.A few quid.
If new car drivers drove a Lgv for a day at an airfield\race track they would understand about the job we do and not join the anti-truck brigade in middle age.

The trouble is the type of people who want a lorry ban through their town or village are the type of people who would object to a bypass being built through the surrounding countryside. As long as they are ok sod everyone else. It’s the same down my way - People moan that their energy bills are too high, but don’t want fracking anywhere near them in case the world explodes
