Funnily enough, I work with a “freelance” scaff lad, on a certain job on a saturday, he fills in with HGV work, when the scaff is either quiet, or, he is withholding his labour, because the rates are not good enough 
Scaff is as cut-throat as haulage, he works for around six scaff companies, and, according to him, there are lots of CASH jobs, he uses the HGV work to “balance” the books shall we say
