Moo-ving animals

Got wind of a job moving animals in a rigid. Pays £20+ per hour so might be worth going for. What do I need to know. Ta.

at £20 plus per hour I would say your up to your knee’s in bullshine already.

Out of all the users on here there is only one that signs off his posts with ‘.ta’…come on dozy we didn’t even have to call TNCSI to identify you :unamused:

Two things:

  1. How to drive a lorry

  2. How to handle animals.

The latter skill is far more important and difficult.

I’d respectfully suggest that, unless you already have extensive experience of handling animals in a farm environment, you don’t waste your time applying for a job as a livestock driver.

One leading light in the industry said to me: “I can make a cattleman into a truck driver, but I’ve never been able to make a truck driver into a cattleman.”

Pigs, sheep and horses are all more difficult to handle than cattle (pigs bite, sheep jump, and horses each have a mind all of their own while the other species’ primary instinct is to ‘follow the herd’).

Having done 10 years of international horse transport, if you haven’t got a clue leave it to those who do.

That sounds more like fallen stock kind of money, and it takes a certain type of driver to do that work!

We don’t earn £20 an hour unfortunately.

Two biggest downsides of moving farm animals…

1/. The number of farms/fields which are virtually inaccessible… but you still have to get in – and back out again!

2/. The number of farms/fields which are down the end of lanes marked (for eg.) 7.5 t max… and the arguments you can have with cretinous car driving half-wits who don’t understand the meaning of the words “except for access”.

… oh, and, of course, the pleasure you have hosing the back of the vehicle out after every load!

Not up here. Of course Scotland falls far behind the rest of the UK when it comes to wages. Not even the boys who do the dirty work of killing casualty animals are on that.

What exactly is fallen stock work? I’m guessing youre explanation will tell my it takes a certain type of driver.

Can that be done without additional qualifications, if not, what qualifications do you need?

As a fallen stock driver your job is to go to farms or anywhere animals are kept and kill and remove animals that are either ill or injured. Companies like mine who do this work generally recruit drivers who come from an agricultural background. It’s not a clean job and you need to be a certain type of person who can deal with killing everyday.

didn’t they use to be called fellmonger’s ?.

Good info, cheers for that. You’re certain type of driver comment makes a lot of sense now.

I’d like to say that being former special forces, I’d have no problems at all killing things because it’s what I’ve been trained to do.

I’d like to say that, but it would be a lie!

Not for me thanks.
I eat them but would rather remain ignorant and in denial to how they get to my plate.

Just remember…

An ill or injured animal will be angry - VERY angry!!!

So go ahead, let’s see how close you can get to 1100kgs of angry beef with a captive bolt gun, or the ‘free bolt’ gun…….

Oh, and don’t forget to ‘pith’ them…

And I thought I had a job for the boys… :open_mouth: definitely couldn’t handle that

Where I am its a firm called Douglasbrae who do that sort of work ,you smell their motors long before you see them. I will pass on this opportunity as well.
