Certainly not metal, the body that is. It looks like some kind of fibre-plastic? If you look at doors/wind deflectors etc. if the paint has been stripped (accident dmg)
It probably makes them lighter / cheaper but are they any good safety wise and it also promotes replacing of panels/doors rather than repair (more expensive/wasteful) or is there actual metal underneath all the fibrous crap?
I think of all points safety is the least concern able on the grounds that nowadays everything has to pass safety tests that are far more stringent than they have been in the past.
Judging by recent events they appear to be made from firelighters and gunpowder! It’s not too long ago when lorry fires were rare with the cause invariably being a blowout that wasn’t spotted in time or badly adjusted trailer brakes sending the trailer up which sometimes spread to the unit.
Nowadays with the impossibly high exhaust temperatures coupled to miles of electrical wiring it seems that you only need to look at a truck in a funny way and it’ll explode like it’s in a Hollywood blockbuster.

Maybe it`s not more truck fires, but one hell of a lot more photos and videos of those that do happen.
Well that ^^^ certainly is an interesting thought, but I can’t fully agree I’m afraid. This week alone I’ve been massively delayed by two separate lorry fires. That’s never happened in the previous x number of years, so I can only speculate on what I witness my friend.
Back in the day…
I had a DAF super space cab doing containers around the UK. As I shut the door, a large piece of the door at the corner just snapped off like a childrens school ruler. This was also the same lorry that locked me out.
