Mobile phones

D.Thompson:

By the look of the drivers they are in good employment and must be of reasonable intelligence to be in a position to be driving such vehicles yet they still put themselves and others at risk, never mind their risk of prosecution

The only reason can be they don’t think its likely they will be caught and a £200 fine and 6 points is not going to bother them too much so they risk it, make it £1000 and 11 points and lets see how many we see then. (i would prefer a instant ban as i said in my last post)

.

Interesting points.
Increasing penalties for many offences (motoring and criminal) has very little effect. If the offender is “sure” they won’t get caught then a 5 pound or 5 thousand quid fine, won’t influence them.
Increasing fines doesn’t do much to stop speeding, increased camera use does.
Increased prison doesn’t stop burglars, security alarms do.

In my opinion transport offices should never be calling personal mobile phones when they know a driver is on the move.

In my view the transport office shouldn’t request your personal phone number and if you volunteer it they should never phone you on it unless its an emergency.
We are issued with a very basic mobile phone for work use only (it doesn’t even have a touch screen) but it does the job it can take texts so no need for the office to call when they are almost certain you are mobile.

While i agree that increasing penalties will not stop those that are determined to ignore the law i am sure introducing an instant minimum months ban and car confiscation would as these people obviously do not consider £200 to be a lot of money and 6 points leaves them another 6 to play with.

That is a tough call.
On the one hand it seems like a good idea as there are so many clear cut, obvious offences being committed.
However you are giving the Police too much power which they WILL abuse when it suits them.
I can say that from personal experience of being charged with using a mobile phone when I was not (my phone was in my pocket at the time of the alleged offence).
It took a fair amount of effort to win my case but at least I retained use of my vehicle whilst the case was ongoing.

I would like to think the majority of police wouldn’t abuse the law and obviously they would have to prove you were using the phone which i imagine would be fairly easy if they contacted your provide and the same goes for you to prove they were telling porkies.

I believe you are correct - the majority would not abuse the law.
Trust me though, when you are victimised by one of the minority it matters not that the majority are not abusers.
I have no criminal record, my vehicle (a motorhome) was 100% legal, I was 200+ miles from home on holiday & I do not present as a threat.
None of that mattered as I was being targeted by one of the arrogant minority on a power trip.

The Police have no obligation to prove their case at the side of the road (I tried arguing that).
They would take your vehicle & you would have to prove your innocence later.
Once you prove your innocence there is no recompense for any inconvenience suffered etc.

I live on Teesside where we have Cleveland Police

“Scandal-hit Cleveland police has become the first force to be branded “failing” in all areas by inspectors.” The Guardian, Fri 27 Sep 2019

and

"Cleveland Police should be disbanded if senior officers cannot bring in improvements, an MP has warned.
The force has come under fire for using spying powers to hunt out leaks of potentially damaging information to journalists.
It admitted unlawfully accessing private phone records at a tribunal last week.
Stockton South Tory MP James Wharton said if “serious problems” were not tackled the force should be abolished."

How many police forces are so corrupt that even the local Tory MP wants them abolished?

All i can say is i have been driving for 44 years and as part of a job for most of those and the only time i have had dealings with the police was when i did something wrong (speeding, no seatbelt etc) i am not saying every police officer is without fault but i think the vast majority are lets be honest there are total s***s in all walks of life why would the police force be any different.

Thank you. That led to some interesting reading.
It appears they are just running a little ahead of other forces in their corruption & incompetence but the rest are catching up fast so they won’t stand out too much in future.

D.Thompson:
why would the police force be any different.

Isolated officers yes, but this is the entire force.

@ ‘‘Traffic commissioner’’
On something totally unrelated…
This is how they hate us parking up after we have delivered their various crap to them.

You should tell the overpaid thick clown in an office in Somerset Council to stop using ‘you’ as a threat , and also learn how to spell your title in non French way. :unamused:

Traffic Commissionaire…that conjures up memories of those guys dressed in gold braid who used to roam the foyer of the Odeon, directing you to the Circle seats or the Kia-Ora stand.

:sunglasses: Yep exactly, and these clowns think we are so gullible to believe their ‘threats’.
It’s an INDUSTRIAL estate ffs,.places synonymous with trucks, but they say we can’t park there. :smiling_imp:
No offence to you, (or to ‘Commissionaires’ either for that matter  )…but I couldn’t give a toss who they report me to for taking an obligatory rest. :unamused:

This is what is wrong with our officials in all areas.
When contacted they ignore the major point & address a side issue to make it look as though the contact has been addressed.
In this particular case we are dealing with extremes & it looks overall light hearted - but it is a formula always used & to great effect.
Politicians are the masters of this technique but most lesser officials are using it now.

To help focus I ask the following numbered questions of the TC:

  1. Will you be contacting Somerset Council about the misuse of the sign referencing the TC?
  2. Will you be informing Somerset Council to remove the sign(s)?
  3. If the answer is “no” to either question 1 or 2 are you happy to be considered complicit in the abusive use of the signs?

Do we know that sign was put up by the local council though? It looks to me rather like the work of a NIMBY busybody.

The local council should be even more interested if they have not put up the sign.
I agree that the poor quality of the wording suggests amateur work but unfortunately local councils do often use illegal & poorly worded signage.
It was not too long ago that the laybys of Scotland were littered with illegal signs prohibiting overnight parking.

If it is a private ind est, then any* sign the land owner chooses to put up, is OK.
.
Weren’t the Commissionaires one of the less successful Motown groups?

*y’know what I mean

They were and a Commissionaire is someone who stands in the doorway of a building in a rather splendid uniform, opening the door for the nobs and preventing the hoi poloi gaining access.
