And that Atki could ■■■■ all over the 8LXB’s as well Brian,if the late Derrick Hill snr. from Penrith was still here he would admit it,under duress, and he paid a couple of grand more for one of the first 8LXB Borderers
Ok Dennis turn the clock back you can have your ■■■■■■■ motor , now which Atkinson should i bring
oh yes Big ■■■■■■■

Now howay wor Bri lets consider the bare facts ----- 8LXB/DB 8 speed/Group axle— versus— ■■■■■■■ 220/RTO610/Eaton 2 speed axle— got to be no contest 'cause the 8 LXB couldn’t keep up

Correction here Dennis, IIRC, My mentor the late Parkey Denham drove this from new, Now he was a dedicated long distance driver, He was the best, & he told me on several occasions how good the 240 Gardner was & good fuel returns, Im sure you will agree that what suits one haulier dosnt suit another Eh, Regards Larry.
OH no no no no,this nice little fellow had a 9-speed fuller and a well sorted 8LXB
NONE of the other 8lxb motors could do anything with it
on the hills nor could the 14ltr N-A ■■■■■■■ motors that ran at the time in the fleet.
-
.
This was a Great motor as one Driver who was past going up windy hill said “that thing is abnormal the way it pulls”

Would this driver have been the late Parkey Denham ■■?, Regards Larry.
Well my silver knight has the mighty 6lxb with 180 horses straining at the leash. it dropped to 40 over Thelwall at 12ron gross but its mine and I love it cheers jamie
First of all Larry and Bri I’m only talking about one Atki OJM480L which as I said had 20 usable gears far too many for a normal fleet motor because 95% of drivers couldn’t handle it so would just leave it in one ratio until it got rolling then they may have clicked into high ratio.I once pulled on to Charnock Richard, fully freighted, and a few minutes later a Scotsman(in bib and brace) came running across the park and went straight to the back of the cab on my Atky "wit ■■■■■■ motor hae you got in there Jimmy?! He wouldn’t have it that it was only a 220 until I persauded him it had 20 gears,I had passed him coming up Wigan and he thought his 8LXB Atky was the “dogs” and from memory he had similar weight on to me,he was from Edinborough IIRC but he sure was “■■■■■■■■■■■ Lad that got our Atky new got asked regularly about the motor. We sent it down to Daventry in the mid 70’s and Lloyd Jennings drove it and he could make it perform as well. Now then lads there is also no way am I crabbing 8LXB/C’s either on their performance or their economic, reliable, operation as I’ve just been having a reckon up and we ran, over the years, either 17 or 18 of the big Gardners and they did us proud. However,I reckon we proved that if you have enough gears to use in small steps and a decent engine it would perform very well, the only draw back was having a driver behind the wheel that could handle it.Cheers Dennis.
Now Dennis did you specify the atki with that setup or did it come by mistake? if you specced it was it a lot more expensive. Slightly of thread i asked you a while back if you bought a 113 g943 dkc■■? off albert regan which you hadn’t but I think it was a ■■■■■■ back when he went bust so it would have been sold by haydock commercialls possibly? ? cheers jamie

OJM480L was the third new Borderer I bought, the second one I got a few months earlier I had spec’d with a single speed Eaton axle,I was always a big Eaton fan. Now this second Atky had a 205 ■■■■■■■ engine and did about 57 MPH at 2000revs which was just a little bit low geared but OK I suppose. Anyway the third one I ordered would now have the up-rated 220 ■■■■■■■ engine and I’d also spec’d the Eaton single speed axle,my top driver was getting this next Atky, his second new one, so as you maybe know a single speed Eaton is just blanked off in low ratio so we decided to fit this new one up with the two speed motor which Scotts at Penrith did for us.Well with the two speed fitted onto the existing axle this motor could catch pidgeons and you ran out of “bottle” before you got flat out I kid you not! So back into Scotts at Penrith and they changed the diff for the next lower ration of 6: ? from the original 5:? diff which gave us the cracking motor that it turned out to be.I only paid for the Labour as the diff that came out was virtually new and was a usable ratio. As for the R113’s (DKC reg Nos) yes I did buy them from Haydock, well more like “robbed” them really as just at that time the whole job was in recession in early 1991 but I had picked up a new contract at The East Lancs Mill at Radcliffe and needed about 18 additional motors and a load of trailers. So I bought 8 113’s off Haydock 1xF reg 5xG reg (DKC’s) and 2xH reg(nearly new) they were all mint units and I paid £185 K for the bunch which my accountant disputed as too low ,some mistake!! initially until he counted them in the depot !! Cheers Dennis.
Now Dennis i knew the lad who had 943 from new he was well ■■■■■■ when it went back it was like new.did you take over from onward at East lancs mill i know A T Sixsmith did it for many years before that cheers jamie

OK Jamie, this is how it happened at East Lancs Mill, British Syphon Industries PLC who owned the East Lancs Mill were in the ■■■■ and the mill was struggling. So the Swedish Bank who were in for a “ton” of money took the mill over and brought in two very experienced guys to turn it around and hopefully the Swedes would get their brass back. These two chaps happened to be the former Chief excecutive of Bibby Paper Group (who we did all the transport for from 4 Mills) and the M.D. of one of the Bibby mills (Devon Valley Industries) So I got a call one Friday afternoon very shortly after the new management had taken over the gist of which was " Hi Dennis,Don here when can you get down to Radcliffe for a meeting" I say when do you want me to turn up"? Don says " 9am Monday morning will be fine" The bottom line was we had to “quote” but Terry Coffey the “other” top man told me don’t worry about anyone else that we have asked for a quote the job is Bewick Transport’s as I know you will do a proper job and we have enough agg on our hands getting the Mill performing again. So that was it Jamie,a £2 million pound contract landed on our doorstep ! But having said this the transport operation was a ■■■■■■■ joke,Onward did the “outgoing” and every “Tom ■■■■ and Harry” brought the pulp and recycled paper inward,so the traffic chaos around the streets was a nightmare with the local residents up in arms. We sorted the problem out PDQ as we organised it that more-or-less we brought in the raw materials and left with the finished product, problem solved and the surrounding natives were pacified
and the new mill management were very happy
Cheers Dennis.

Dennis best one at the moment,if you look closley my 4 year old asleep on the bonnet, didnt sleep long when bobtailing home!!!Spot on that shot ,just as I remember them! I bet the little fella got a rude awakening when you set off!! They were somewhat a “solid” ride not coupled to a loaded trailer!!! Cheers Dennis.
Enough about the Atky’s we ran at Bewick Transport whats the SP on your motor Jamie? I recall that John McGuffie, who I bought McGuffie Transport off in 1974,bought a new Atky identical to yours,it was “H” Reg. They were MkII’s but manufactured in between the MKI and the Borderer we never ran any we only had a couple of MKI’s then our new ones were Borderers. What is the wheel base on your Atky Jamie 9’ 6’’ ? the new Borderers were 10’ 8’'.Our first new Borderer had what would be one of the last Kirkstall BDR axles to be fitted same as yours. The BDR axle in our Atky for some unknown reason was a slightly higher ratio than standard which gave it a top speed of around 63/64 mph whereas the normal ratio gave them about 57mph.This first Atky was a nice smooth runner from memory the 205 ■■■■■■■ engine was fairly quiet, must have been a “one off” eh! And it was fairly economical as well, not quite in a Gardner class but acceptable all the same.Cheers Dennis.
Bewick:
You are to be well congratulated for the fine refurbishment of the Tabern Atkinson Atkiman, how I wish that this Bewick Borderer could have re-appeared on the preservation scene, for it’s cost and it’s spec most definitely made one of the finest Atky’s built, although it was a bit beyond the skill of many drivers those that could handle it could make it “talk” and forget about the Foden 12 speed, this baby had 20 usable gears, it just kept on tramping on the M/Way grades, small staeps and many of 'em !Cheers Dennis.
Have you ever considered buying a complete resoration motor Dennis , or doesnt it interest you. I mean by complete restoration one that
s already been restored , maybe an Atki or an ERF A series or even a 111 painted up in Bewick colours . How about that Buffalo you had on demo that would look the part in Bewicks colours
Now then “Ramone” are you after spoiling my Sunday dinner or what ? A poxy Buffalo in Bewick livery
As much as I would be pleased to see a Bewick Atky or ERF in preservation my wandering around various shows looking at old motors holds no interest for me.They were tools of my trade and I looked after them well maintainence wise and they worked hard for me during the time I operated them end of ! The nearest I want to get to motors nowadays is looking at this screen and having a crack with you Lads. Cheers Dennis.
