If you’re looking at a video screen mounted in the dash instead of at the mirror you will have no peripheral vision as you normally would looking in the mirror-it would be like flying on instruments.■■■■■■■■ to that

I was thinking that .
At least with a mirror you can lean forward etc and get a wider view if needed.
I stand by my concerns when Volvo was looking into this. Fuses blow, wires corrode and electrics fail. By all means add cameras but do not remove conventional mirrors. You cant move forward if you cant see behind you

Exactly…more gubbins to go wrong. I also think cameras are a good idea, specially the ones mounted on each corner looking down and you look at a screen that shows an aerial view of your truck with everything that’s around you (not sure how that would work on an artic though) but I think mirrors should always be there or at least available if needed.

I’ve never…
Known the wires to deteriorate in the mirrors we all currently have now. That’s not to say they don’t, but I think most trucks are engineered well enough to withstand corrosion. Also if they did become the norm, the wiring to them could become part of the testing by the ministry. Brake lines are pass/fail for corrosion it’s not inconcievable that wiring to the cameras could come under the same srutiny.
Perhaps keep some drill holes blanked off and keep a spare mirror in the tool box for get you home purposes? Bit like a spare wheel in your car, if one fails you have another one to get you home.
Never used a truck with cameras like that, and it will take a bit of getting used to, but seems the way forward to me. Approaching junctions etc conventional mirrors create a blind spot. This`ll cure that.
dcgpx points out rightly that moving your head gives a wider view when necessary with mirrors, but maybe “wide view” option button would help?
More to go wrong and break? Electrics are more reliable today than in past times, and no more susceptible to damage than mirrors are from passing trucks or “trees that jump out at you”. Yeah, OK , me.
And the ferries will be able to get us to park even closer together with no mirror arms!
Cameras just dont seem to work at night unless you’ve expensive quality ones which they arent going to fit on trucks.
Your eyes are so much better at adjusting to different regions of light and dark than a lens which requires a light source or IR sensitivity. Reversing cams switch to B&W at they are hopeless like having a security light pointed at you when theres any light source.
Cant see the cameras on the Merc but the ones in the vid look rather fragile so hedge vs camera could get a little expensive. Unless this thing can spring inward.
Most importantly a mirror makes you turn your head and perhaps spot things that wouldnt be clean on a screen. Oh and no one is going to get a sore neck during their test from doing too many mirror checks.
In a few short years you will chuckle about those old vehicles that had those massive mirrors mounted that used to create those massive blind spots etc.
They are the future plain & simple.

Unfortunately I think your right, these will become the norm.
And I mean unfortunately - personally I’m a techie freak but I don’t agree with this ‘advancement ‘ being fitted!

5 years ago we got brand new DAFs that blew the fuses for sidelights if you left them on when you hooked up to a trailer. Water causes all sorts of issues with electrics. How many times have you had disco lights after picking up a trailer and it was caused by a few drops of water?
They are not going to change to higher quality electrics just because they are mirrors. They are using the cheap crap and will carry on doing so

I’ve sent emails to…
Mercedes Benz, Volvo, Skoda, DAF and MAN.
Dear Mr Big lorry manufacturer, please stop developing new technology because there is a chance some water might get into the wiring and cause some problems.
Luckily you have managed to get away with collision avoidance systems and anti-lock brake systems by some improbable miracle but sticking cameras to the exterior of an artic is obvioulsy way beyond the realms of what is possible in the laws of physics.
Lots of luv from larf
(ps I hope you like the picture I have drawn of my house with some flowers at the front of it)

Anti collision systems that cant see yellow cars in the rain?
ABS which is not compatible between all unit/trailer combinations?
Nice try at being a smart arse but you seem to be missing the smart bit
Cameras arent going to do a perfect job immediately. But I reckon they should be as good as mirrors (without creating blind spots) pretty much outta the box, if given any thought. They dont have to be perfect to be worthwhile, just better, and they seem to be.

You’re completely…
Missing the point by saying that the wiring will fail.
How do you think the rear light clusters in your unit and trailer work…magic? They’re wired in using little electrical cables that are all over the truck running all kinds of different systems in all sorts of weather.
Will you be able to adjust them so you can still see when your blindsiding, like you can with the mirror remote. Like others have said probably come like it or not, there;s always pro’s and con’s.
As to the wiring on trailers I didn’t think they were made to be waterproof. The wiring on your average skelly is cheap and exceedingly nasty.
