Mirroless training

So our place have 2 new rigid trucks that are mirroless.
The drivers been told they can’t use them unless they’ve been trained and signed off on them.
Anyone else had this?.
And what exactly would training involve.
Apart from you look into screen it acts like a mirror.
Or do they have be turned on set up etc?

i was never trained but its a completely different view in my opinion. I was told by the assesor at the place they never had to be adjusted just jump in and drive. Apparently however there are all sorts of tricks to them.

When I drove for HZ you had to be trained prior to being let loose. I never did the training and consequently never drove one.

Fast forward to my current employment and the first time I touched one was after being driven in a car up to Leeds to pick one up and drive 2 miles to an about to be opened power station where a film crew were waiting to film me for the day performing complex manoeuvres fo the day! Talk about a baptism of fire!

I’ve now been driving one for around three months and still consider them to be a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist.

Familiarisation of new kit, happens quite regularly with big companies. Same for us with the next gen DAF trucks, same at DHl when we got the new Volvo trucks. Until you had been signed off could not drive them.
It is better to be shown how something works than just be thrown the keys and expected to figure it out whilst going down the road.

We had to be trained how to use a pump truck then get a certificate, I kid you not.

I agree.
I have often been given a truck’s keys and “just got on with it”.
It hasn’t killed anyone…but that does not mean the best outcomes have been achieved.
To get a bit of a “heads up” if there are different gearboxes involved on older manual trucks, “Careful, that is a range change switch, not a two speed axle” can save a gearbox full of swarfe.
No need for a ten hour type conversion, but an appropriate bit of info on new features and how to use them, what they are capable of, and what they do not do.
Automatic Cruise Control is not automatic driving!

And why not? No need for hours of training and a full examination, but some muppets do manage to crush their own toes, break colleagues legs and roll pallets off the back of a trailer. They need training. It will never stop all idiots doing idiotic things, but may stop some of it.

I started a new job once was given keys to a Renault couldn’t find reverse.
Embarrassed walked to office some fella came out moaning and happy to show me
he couldn’t work it out.
Rang another driver who said have select forward 1st then reverse.

Being trained on things has nothing to do with idiots not being able to use a pump truck or what ever .
It’s more if an accident happens .they can go you signed a form years ago to say this how it’s done you didn’t follow procedures so your sacked /or can’t make a claim

Edd,is correct, the company can just turn around and say they trained the driver, no compensation.

Hence why drivers have to sign a form to say they have been shown how to use the long reach battery operated fork lift, to unload at Aldi and Lidl RDC’s.

If you tell them you have not, they just show you the controls and how to operate it in a few minutes, when you come back again to any of their RDC’s, to save time I would say , yes, been trained, to save time to get tipped quickly as you unload the trailer yourself.

Nobody ever asked me for the form to see if I had been trained, when it’s busy they may not have enough staff to instruct anyone.

If not trained you may have to wait a while for someone to be available to show you how to use it.

Don’t know about mirrorless training, but I was trained in using mirrors, and I’ve never looked back since.:smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Trained on the DAF. Given a DAF printout, shown a short DAF demonstration video available on YouTube, finished off by a quick practical demo of their operation in the cab with a quick drive round the depot.

We have the mirrorless Actros, and when they first arrived, they (the up aboves) refused to put them out on night shift.
Later, you could only use them on night shift if “you’d had the training”.
They started by giving them to the “better drivers” , until they started getting scraped and crashed.
Then they gave them to anyone that said they were ok with them, inc agency.
Personally, I’d repeat the line of “not had the training”, and at no point did anyone think to provide the training.
Subsequently, after about 4 years had to pick a truck up from service, that wasn’t done, so ended up with a mirrorless.
Drove it back (after finding the light switch, stupid place to put it), and still don’t like them.
Unnecessary ‘advancements’
