I write this sat in the cab on a 15. My first solo trip out. Have had several weeks double manned being shown the ropes. Today it seems the training wheels have been removed. 4 drops left and it’s going ok so far.

Good luck with the rest of your shift, I can’t wait to get out on the road, I am holding off using agencies but i think i will have to sign up with a few, the well talked about quiet spell in jan and feb is putting me off though
Cheers
Paul
Best & quickest way to learn is being out on your own imo,no one to stop you going wrong which can make you inadvertently become complacent when you have someone with you.
Enjoy

Seven weeks is a long time to be shown the ropes, unless you’re doing ADR work?
But well done nevertheless
It does say several so could actual mean two or three.
Depends on the company I guess, some are very good at bringing a newly passed driver upto a competent level before letting them go it alone, which in the long run could potentially save them thousands as opposed to those companies that just sling a set of keys at a newbie and within a week they’ve caused enough damage to wipe out the companies profit for the year!
My place were very good, they paid for my class one then kept me with an assessor until he was happy enough to sign me off to go out alone confident that I’d be able to not cause mass destruction.
Not saying it’s purely down to that but I didn’t have a bump for 9.5 years after passing(scraped a bollard trying to get through a gap that wasn’t quite big enough, only paint damage and damage to my ego as I wanted to get to 10 years unscathed ),mate of mine did his class one and tipped it over on Shrewsbury roundabout on his second outing…he even managed to get compensation because he was sacked for it but he argued in court that he wasn’t sufficently trained and the company were negligent he won his unfair dismissal case.
I had 2 days with another showing me the ropes until I was on my own. Can’t say that it would’ve helped me being out more with others even if it was offered to me.

Surely there’s only so much you can be shown? My first job I was shown how to do the paperwork and then off I went on my own.

I work for Brakes. Didn’t want to take the agency risk or grief so went direct to an employer.

That’s true. Particularly with every reverse, not ashamed to say I’ve gotten out the cab for a look several times today.

Good man can’t beat the "See I can do it " feeling the first time your let loose solo, will only get better,us old buggers who have been driving years will do a drop and its like oh well next one,but as a first solo driver it’s like “Get in 1 more victory” keep the confidence up and learn learn learn never stop learning no matter how long you drive.
Being a cheeky question what kind of work are you doing? Just asking as might be able to help,if you get stuck somewhere
Jeff.
Edit.durr read all posts are you out of Tamworth? Should get a regular round to do if you know already.

5 weeks actually. First week was classroom induction all the health n safety stuff. Then I’ve been out with other drivers learning. I do feel well looked after. Couldn’t have asked for better as a new pass on my first job.

Fair enough, good to see they’re looking after you in that case. Too many people are thrown in at the deep end nowadays and expected to know everything because the company don’t want to pay for training.
