Milestone/Numbermill PaySlip

So I just started doing some Ad-Hoc work for Milestone Agency - They forced me on to NumberMill the umbrella company, told me they don’t do PAYE.

Done 2 shifts

Shift 1

11 hours 35 mins pay £10.76 for first 8 hours then £14.03 overtime so by my reckoning that should be £128.17 (Break 30 mins not paid)

Shift 2 10 hours 18 mins pay £12.75 paid for 9.8 hours due to break = £124.95

Total = £253.12

Plus the expenses I claimed - £10 both days subsistence, £6.75 mileage both days and safety kit £69.97 = £103.47

Total £253.12+£103.47= £356.59

What do I walk away with - £199.24, seems to low to me and on the payslip they have paid me 20.88 @ £6.50 an hour, 20.88 holiday pay at £0.78 an hour with £77.63 in expenses.

Non of it makes sense and it seems like a total con to me.

Someone recommend me another agency in Wiltshire/Hampshire where I don’t have to use Umbrella!!!

The mistake you’ve made there is that you think the expenses are extra, they are NOT they come out of your £253.12 to protect them from tax, then added back in. Which by my rough calcs is within £2.00

RSG

as above, you dont get the expenses, you basically get paid minimum wage the rest paid as a bonus. the expense are used to reduce whats liable for tax.

Rip off,I’m with another agency because of this exact problem and wasn’t really happy with milestone either. I’m Self employed now,it’s much better now I’ve got my head round it

I’m moving agency

Milestone and Numbermill are best avoided in my opinion.

Avoid any umbrella company, I got ripped off the same.

I’ve just received the following info from “Numbermill” via email and thought I’d share it

IR35 Chief Finance Officer responsibilities
IR35 - Chief Finance Office responsibilities - HMRC latest thoughts

Following on from recent comments by HMRC that the planned changes in the Public Sector re off payroll arrangements April 2017, will categorically not affect the private sector. They have however commented that their “trajectory” is to remind Chief Finance Officers of their fiduciary duties with regard to ensuring that the appropriate taxes are paid throughout the supply chain. Gross reporting as per the Intermediaries Onshore Finance Act 2014 was the first indication of this approach.

Many businesses engage contractors who operate as a Director of a Personal Service Company (PSC). And in the past, paid no attention to their tax status. HMRC have suggested that the onus to undertake some basic checks could fall on the agency or engaging business. Such checks could include;

  • Insisting on an independent IR35 review
  • Proof of accountants - and that the accountants are members of a recognised institute eg ACA, ACCA
    -RTI and dividend proofs

HMRC have stated that it is not their intention to remove PSC’s from the contracting sector, more to add a deeper level of self regulation

It does go on to embellish their favourable services :unamused:

Nobody mentioning the 11 hours working with only 30 minutes rest?

No because its legal. Its only illegal if they drive 4.5hrs or more. If they’re doing night pallet network trunking they can quite easily do a couple of hours driving, spend several hours at the hub and a couple of hours driving back so no need to take a 45 minute break and only need to take a 30 minute one to satisfy the WTD.

What’s the £69.97 for safety kit?

I understand he gets 30 minute minus of Shift Time (no matter how much Break he takes)
