The only Roly Long that I knew came from Hampshire, he was not a Welshman.

He is on the left in this photo.

Dave.

I thought he came from Sarf Africa

Yes I can confirm that this was Roly Long he used to live in Petersfield I think, I used to sell him Scania spares for his LHD 141 6X2 with the extended cab.

I also sold him this ex Dutch Scania

I know years ago he did some Barcelonas (driving) for me and some sellers for Barry Barnes, not seen him for a while now.

Hi Steve
No, it is not Tony, and if you look really close at the picture you will see that this gent is smoking a tipped cig and Tony only smoked Van Nelle Zware Shag roll ups

By the way it would have been his birthday on 5th March. I always call Gwen to say Hi on these sort of days… He is really missed by so many and was a fabulous friend…

Good on you mate, Gwen was a diamond to Tony when he needed it the most.

As for ■■■■, yes i recall that he liked that, but to be honest i think he would smoke anything that was on offer, the same with drink too !!

One of lifes truely great characters…

Steve.

Reading again about Tony Baker makes me smile he was such a character, it was impossible to know what he would say or do next he just did not give a ■■■■. when i first met him he was driving a mack for OHS. Can anyone remember the German company that had a big pipeline contract in Iran and hired a lot of english drivers in the late seventies??. They started the drivers out in germany and had bought well over a hundred used trucks and flat trailers to service the contract. Many of the drivers had never been out of the Uk before never mind overland to Iran. I met some of them as they were entering Iran from bazargan and Included Tony Baker Along with Jeff Ruggins, They had both been made road foremen to get their teams to Iran.(the germans obviously didnt know who they were) . By the time that they had arrived at bazergan they had had enough and were sorry that they had taken on the job.I dont think that the contract lasted very long due to the Revolution, but there must be some other drivers on this forum who were involved or know about this job??. I Later had the pleasure of working with Tony on M&C transport and had many hillarious times with him.I am sure that he will have them all rolling about with laughter up their as he recalls his life down here. When he first worked for Mervyn he lived in a flat in Bristol and he had bought an old rust bucket of a Porsche which he was going to renovate, But he said that it would take him longer to agree his expenses with Mervyn down at the pub near tiptree than to go to Bristol and back so he often did’nt even bother going home between trips. I think that the Porsche eventually rusted away in a corner of the yard in Tiptree. R.I.P. Tony.

A Scot Lost in the Valley’s.

Jamie,
i recall the red Porche 911 well, but if my memory serves me right ( don’t put money on it ! ) i think Tony bought it from Alan Rouse, who after packing in transport opened his own Porche specialist garage at Coggashall, just around the corner from the large DFDS depot. When it finally fells to bits due to rust he replaced it with an old Morris Minor in a pale green colour. There was a few times that Tony and “Tricky” Ricky Foster would go out and about tiptree on pub crawls in it, there are many tales to do with that pair too !! If the weather was bad, I.E. snow, which we used to get more that our share of at Hill Farm, then Mervyn would instruct Tony to chain up his truck, at the time it was a 4x2 F12 “UMD 46S”. On one occasion Tony lost control and went through a chaps front hedge, right across his garden and paths and exited through the hedge on the other side. The owner of the house followed the tyre/chain tracks and found the truck parked up at the Ducane Arms front door. Alan Compton, the landlord, told him that the driver had left the truck there and legged it down the road, …I seem to recall that Tony and Mervyn came out of the pub a day or two later. Mervyn then had some explaining to do to the chap and payed for repairs to his prized garden.

While on the subject of cars Jamie, do you recall John McClung having an old MGB soft-top, which met with the same fate as Tony’s 911, parked in a corner of the yard and rusted to pieces. ■■

Any idea what happened to Allan Hayes, the man who used to have the trailer “bootsales” and sold Tony the red/blue sleeveless ski jackets and the matching “puffa” boots which he was often seen to be wearing ■■

Rogues Gallery is a perfect place for Tony. He kept that naughty twinkle in his eyes pretty much to the end, I am sure he is running around up there being naughty and shouting WTF and may all your babies have bald heads. :open_mouth:
The Morris, if I remember was the old one with the split screen but like the Porsche never got restored.
Tony must have had a thing about hedges; before he became really disabled he could still ride his bicycle and would go to the Pub or the shops. On one occasion his brain would not tell his hands to steer so he went straight on through a guy’s hedge and into the garden. God bless him, he still makes us laugh and even though he is no longer with us in body, he remains in our hearts and minds.
I sometimes wish this forum was X rated, as there are so many naughty funny stories……… :open_mouth:

Yes, you are correct, split screen, small rear window, indicators that ( should of ) popped out of the centre roof pillers and a side valve engine about the same size as your fist !!

It actually was in pretty good condition when he acquired it, although it soon went downhill from there on.

“X rated” , i would imagine that most everybody who uses this forum would not be offended by anything that TB got up too, infact it will most likely bring a smile their faces…

Regards Steve.
