Brit European driver Jimmy Withers from the Trowbridge depot.
Used to run this old F88 roadtrain to Teheran for quite a few trips.

Reddesertfox:
Regarding Pic Nr 1, A wild guess…Could it be The infamous Mr Ruggins.

Not as I knew him.
Jeff had a blond crew cut and no teeth.

Sorry Biffo not sure if there are anymore of Funstons. You got the name Noel right though.

Was not surprised to see that bestbooties got the Brit European one right although I must admit that Mike had actually written down his name as Jim Smethurst.
I particularly like the photo of that old wagon & drag with the writing in the dust and dirt on the cab plus the tyres on the cab roof. It speaks volumes to me and I bet he would have had some tales to tell on just that one trip alone.

OK, lets post another two

The hat’s the thing don’t ye know

I’m so happy I could sh*t

Hi Ron, I was going to guess that the Carmans driver was Ken Bates but I am glad that I didn’t now  .
Can you ask Mike if he knew Jim Smethurst when Jim and Brian Cobb ( a.k.a. Petal or Cobby ) worked for Chet Trux out of I.I.R.C. Ostende doing Saudi in a green Spanish Pageso.

Hi Ron, looking at the last two photo’s at first i thought it was the one and only Andrew Wison Young. But then i had a closer look and thought he was a bit too well dressed and hanging out of a SCANIA never. So its got to be the loveable Irish Rogue Royston Day RIP. Picture number two in all his glory Super Chef Bob Hedley known by many as The Animal. Regards Jamie.

A Scot Lost in the Valley’s Ps I am also priveleged to have known Gerry, Eddie and Noel but was to slow in posting.

Hi Guys

GS OVERLAND: Thanks for posting the photo of you and Bob and the one of Bob on THREE wheels!

bestbooties: Mike apologises for getting Jim’s surname wrong. You were of course right with Jim Withers.

M&C Jamie: Correct with Roy Day and Bob Hedley.

Hang on what number are we up to now? I believe this would be number 9

One of STOLKS intellectual drivers

Photo number 10

They’re not all mine, honest!

mmm?? gone a bit quiet. Is it that you’re lazing around stuffed having eating all that food over christmas or have the last two photos stumped you? I can hardly believe that to be the case though!

I’ll give you a couple more photos to mull over in the days up to the new year.

Number 11

You got Rick Ellis right but wrong on the other one

Rick Ellis and I met up several times when I was on for Expo Freight when I had a 142.
He used to call me “Poser” because I had more home comforts on my motor than he did, including fridge,TV and shower.
Rick,where are you now?

What happened to Gerry Whelan

robthedog:
What happened to Gerry Whelan

I believe he passed away at a young age, others on this site will know more details.

bestbooties, I’m surprised you haven’t given the name of the guy in photo 12…or had he left Simons before you joined them? He lived just down the road from me when I was living in Wembley and a bit further down the road lives another member on here by the name of Rattlesnake Dave but maybe Dave never met him.

iirc rick ellis was on with me for a while with frisinghelli out of trento then he went to the mob out of dover do belgium man’s name escapes me at the mo. not heard of him for about 4 yrs now.
