Might have to put off my training . . . .

But just for a while - got a full-time van driving job through an agency, and despite making a few howlers, they keep asking me back!
Only been doing this a week and already finding out about forty-three point turns in narrow streets (LWB Sprinter), places not being where the roadmap or sat-nav say they are, misspelt addresses, and the guys in the yard thinking I’m a bit of a doofus for any number of reasons! Today’s was trying to reverse the van into a car-sized parking bay (was told to do so, just to leave it sticking out as it wouldn’t be blocking anyone and will be easy to get out tomorrow morning)) and having someone scream “Stop!”. Turns out I was slowly and inexorably haeding towards the boss’s car! Thankfully got the brakes on and managed to complete the manoeuvre safely, was just hot, tired and wanting to get home so stupidly let the concentration slip, but salutory lesson learned with no cost.
Also must always remember to ask for fuel card! Why is it that the last person before you never, ever tops up the tank?
So, still got my eyes on that C licence training, but at least I’m sharpening up my basic skills with this here van.

Good on you pal. I used to drive LWB Sprinter’s years ago. Bloody dodgy at full whack on the motorway when its windy lol.

Good experience in my view. Steering lock isn’t great though.

You sound like an old hand mate, as you have the winging down to a tee!

Glad your keeping busy pal, but don’t delay it too long, you’ve 2 years before you have to take your theory again…

Best of luck!

Ah, no worries, not even got the theory done yet! And I’m learning the whinging from the other drivers, mornings in the break room are interesting. Good way to pick up what way the wind’s blowing, if you see what I mean.

So annoying to have to put off the training, I know how you feel. I passed the theory and hazard a couple of weeks ago want to get on and do the training but due to lack of money I can’t. I am doing 7.5 ton work to earn the money for the training but everytime I get a bit saved I get whalloped with some bill or other! feels like I will never get there. I am the only breadwinner so its not easy. I thought about going with one of those brokers who offer ‘train now pay later’ schemes so I can get on with it and spread the cost but it was twice as much money as going with the trainer direct. I have found a cheap training school in Peterborough but there’s no finance or anything. I have my 67 Mustang up for sale (gutted) so if that sells then I will be ok.

At least you are getting some experience and getting a feel for how it really is out there! Good luck.

I would think twice about selling the Mustang mate , patience is a virtue , sometimes anyway !

Well today was a complete pile of horse dung - shot out on a run after checking that there were pallets in the back of the van - night shift had pre-loaded it, but only partly, so I got called back to collect the first pallet I should have been taking out, lost an hour due to that oversight.

Then, to cap this fine crappy day off, I totally misjudged a turn and scraped the side of the van down a brick wall! All my own fault too, expecting to get a bollocking and lose the job, but they all just laughed and grumbled a bit, then said to come back in tomorrow and next week, so either worse has happened before or they’re desperate for van drivers! Van looks a right shocking sight, totally ripped off the black trim and running light on one side (thankfully not the sliding door side), and got a massive dent with seriously deep scratches down one panel and over the rear wheel arch.

Got to drive the thing tomorrow, stopped shaking now but still feeling like the stuffing’s been knocked out of me.

Have u considered a career as an artist? :open_mouth:

Seriously mate, don’t sweat it, crap happens in all industries. It’s when it KEEPS happening you start to worry.

That reminds me, where is Dozy…

Haha, yeah I am an artists, look where it got me!

Felt like such a total muppet today, but still, they want me back tomorrow and next week, so either they’re desperate or they’ve seen a lot worse (probably both)!

Them wanting you back is all that counts. You must have held your head in shame, and used your best big puppy dog eyes, when you told them about the damage!
