Middle lane driving

Oh dont worry I get it but the thread has moved on as they nearly always do :grimacing:
We are now talking about Grandpa Joe doing 45 in the middle lane! :sunglasses:

I wonder if you sit in the pub and talk with your mates and all you talk about is the one subject and you wont allow anybody to move on?? :unamused: :unamused:

OK, back on topic.

Yes I do sometimes sit in the middle lane. Well the 2nd lane of the 4 lane stretch of the M25 between M3 and M23 to be precise.

When and why? If I do extended hours and happen to be driving back between 1PM and 3PM on the M25 and my patience has worn thin and I get fed up with the many car drivers who sit next to me in lane 2 matching my speed oblivious to my indicators. I have a fast lorry so constantly have to pull out to overtake other lorries and slow cars. There comes a point at the end of the day when it’s easier to just sit in lane two. I’m not holding anyone up. In fact I’m often undertaking cars that are sat in lanes 3 and 4.

I only ever do this on the M25. I think it’s the camera signs on the overhead gantries that make the traffic crawl along at 50mph. All other motorways I drive on the cars come flying past, but the M25 they always seem to go slow. On the M25 lane 1 and 2 often seem to move faster than lanes 3 & 4 with lane 4 being the most congested.

I think those new ‘active traffic management’ things on the motorway actually do more harm than good, it’s a clever way for someone to capitalise on us motorists-cause more traffic & delays so we use more fuel so there’s a higher tax benefit from fuel sales then there’s the cash gained from the cameras that flash you for doing the speed you’re meant to do because you’re on a ■■■■■■■ motorway… :smiling_imp:

Ok having had the luxury for the last few years of a short trip into work down minor roads I’d lost the patience for middle lane hoggers.
Now I’m back to a 32 mile drive down the M5 to work which is ok because its just after midnight, the return home however is a friggin nightmare.
My driving style is to set my cruise at 73 mph (checked with my satnav to be a real 70mph) and I would really like to keep lane discipline using lane one until I’m overtaking etc.
HOWEVER :imp: the reality is that as I’m overtaking slower vehicles another car will happily sit behind me (despite lane 3 being empty) but the second I move to lane 1 will accelerate until they are alongside me. They then sit there until I reach the next slower moving vehicle in lane 1 at which point I have to accelerate to undertake the idiot in lane 2 or decelerate to come in behind them (at which point they seem to lose all confidence and slow down) then I have to overtake them again and the whole process starts again.
This has resulted in me now assessing traffic catching me up and if I think they may be alongside me as I’m passing a slower moving vehicle I WILL move to lane 2 earlier than I would like and sit there.
I now try to decide whether these idiots will be in a position to block me in when I’m in my truck as well and will move to lane 2 prematurely so they don’t get a chance. I now realise that 99% of motorists either have no idea of what is going on around them or they don’t give a flying ■■■■ if they are getting in your way or not :imp:.

^^^^ This 100% even in a lorry. Why are they scared of moving out to lane 3? Incase the person they try to overtake suddenly speeds up and leaves them stranded? :unamused:

There should be an extra module of driving test to allow cars on a motorway. Think of the revenue!

Bring on the autobahns!!
Hgvs lane 1 only 7am-7pm!
No problems, all doing same speed!

Surely this just creates a queue of nose to tail HGV’s in lane one so no one can enter or leave the motorway?

we are all ‘‘professional’’ drivers, surely we have the decency to hang back slightly when a car indicates to leave at the junction. Also these amazing car drivers that know how to drive better than anyone else will give themselves enough time to move across in anticipation of leaving at the junction they need.

Or am I living in another world
lol

Im sure this happens in germany■■?

Giving way to car drivers, you’re clearly living in another world there fella…

I spend a fair amount of time in lane 2, especially on the A1, as most of the trucks i drive are faster than the others.
This obviously holds up the car drivers and they do not appreciate it one bit, quite often giving me abuse…But I dont mind abuse, it enables me to realise that I am still alive. There was one bloke this week who actually pulled in, in front of me and slammed his brakes on....I was 44 tons, he was stopping a lot faster than me and I wasnt really trying to hard to stop, he soon got the message and pulled out again :unamused: I wonder why people are so stupid

With all the problems of the world what is it with middle lane moaners just look in mirror if clear indicate then pas the said vehicle, I will tell you what gets on my ti…s is when I am on inside lane I see mainly cars pull out overtake pull in overtake pull in overtake, why not just stay in middle lane my god…

The few times i’ve driven in Germany, this does seem to happen on occasions but i personally think that the driving discipline over there amonst all drivers seems so much better than over here.
Admitidly i’ve not been over there now for a couple of years so that may have changed.

They should just have a mininum motorway speed limit of 60mph for all vehicles under 3.5 tonne, if you want to dawdle, stick to the A roads.

Either you’re a troll, an idiot, or you’ve never read your highway code!!! Take your pick!!

Theres on lane on a motorway and that’s lane 1. Other lanes are overtaking lanes only, not for dippys to sit in doing 50mph

I drive a fast truck, so if I pull out into the middle lane to overtake and see a string of trollies, maritimes etc ahead i will just stay there until i have passed them all if the motorways particularly busy. Best just to stand your ground and get on with it imo than risk struggling to get back out there later because no car driver wants to let you out.

I know what your saying and i agree, but there seem to be a few that are stayin in the middle lane and there is nothing in the n/side lane. (early hours when not alot about) When you approach them and flash them to move back over so you dont have to under take them.
When they do occasionally move over they look at you as if your in the wrong for flashing them.

ROB888 Thats what I am on about if your not in the way and the lane is clear why keep jumping in and out,

I’ve never once noticed HGVs doing this.
