I’ve been paid a meal allowance ever since I started working for T of S, it’s £5 a day if we’re away from the yard for 6hrs or more.
We’ve never been asked to provide receipts until now (well sort of, we’ve not had any official request, just a woman in the office has asked us to save receipts). Now if I buy a bacon butty from Tina’s Baps, what do I do about a receipt? Also does the £5 have to be spent each day or can I not spend it for 2 days and then spend it all in one day? If I’m tramping away, can I get some supplies and cook in the cab and stick that receipt in?
Any help on this would be appreciated, I always spend my £5 a day (often more) over the course of a week if you add it all up, but very rarely do I spend £5 a day each and every day.
Thats fine then, there hasn’t been a problem until I was asked today and tbh the woman that has asked me is the type who thinks there more important than they really are, until I get anything official I’m just going to carry on as before, like I say its not normally an issue spending the £5, it’s just getting a receipt from some eateries isn’t possible.
I was thinking that, if you ask for a receipt at a burger van it’ll just be your order on a scrap of paper with a total price.
how nice and big are tina’s baps? dosent your missis make you a good breakfast when you leave for work so your not hungry the rest of the day and have to call in to see tina
Maybe they think £5 is excessive and want to cut it by proving that hardly anyone spends the £5 a day so it’s not worth paying…paranoia at it’s best but I wouldn’t put owt past companies in these times.
We get a thumping £2.70 lunch allowance if we aint on a reload day, get and extra £2.70 if we early start. No receipts required, I put mine in the tin for holiday beers.
To be correct, the HMRC allow employers to write off their tax liability for an amount expended - not the full amount paid. so your boss still has to pay the majority of your meal (assuming you have one) but is allowed to give you the money without checks. there are both national and local agreements on how much they can put against their tax bill without providing receipts.
However the HMRC can at any time ask for tax write offs to be justified - its the same with your night out money- the tax man doesn’t ignore night out money, nor do they in any way repay it, The only part of night out money that your boss ( our you) don’t have to pay is the tax- every other penny of night out pay comes out of the bosses bank account.
The misconception that A) Night out money is part of your wages and B) it costs nothing because HMRC gives it back is wrong

Thin end of the wedge Newlad. Mark my words, your allowance will be gone by Christmas!
Yeah I kind of get that feeling too, however I know it sounds petty but that extra £25/30 a week in your pocket might just be enough to send me closer to look for work closer to home.

You don’t need receipts for up to £5. If you wish to claim more than £5 per day then you must keep receipts
It’s £2 unless a higher amount has been agreed.
EIM66140 - Tax treatment of lorry drivers: mid-day meals: allowances paid by employers
Sections 337 and 338 ITEPA 2003
Many employers meet the cost of, or contribute towards, a driver’s mid-day meal by either issuing meal vouchers or making a cash payment. These contributions may be treated as not taxable where they:
do not exceed £2.00 per day and
are paid to lorry drivers whose duties oblige them to take meals away from home and their permanent workplace (if any).
A dispensation can be given for greater amounts where appropriate, see EIM66145.
That’s correct Harry the agreed meal allowance with Rha and hmrc hasn’t changed
In over 20 years
But if agreement in place then ok
One other bit with meal ioe’s and night out allowance
The employer must be able to prove to hmrc at anytime that
It is a reasonable expense to the driver that he is I curing those expenses
Whilst away from base and to receive these tax and ni free
