Hey guys n Gals!
I’m a wee bit stressed tonight but trying not to get worked up over nothing.
As some of you may remember I posted a wee while ago saying I had a CE position to go to after passing my test and everything was looking ace… Ive still got there in the end but only after a period of being messed about a little.
Ive secured a job at the same company as my dad hauling steel, coil and logs/timber etc as my dads boss said he was overwhelmed with work at the mo and had no issues giving me a job experience or not.
So a date was agreed for me to start work and I handed in my notice at my old job driving a 18t rigid for Sunlight service group. I did this so I had a weeks gap to go on a family holiday expecting to start my new job when I returned.
The weekend after the holiday my dads boss rang him to say he handnt got hold of a hire wagon and had no spare units as no drivers were on holiday that week and that I would have to start the following week.
Needless to say I was left feeling stupid, let down and a little bit peed off that I now had a week without pay or anything to do.
In the end me and dad decided Id go out with him for three days in his lorry and split the driving and I would do all the load securing etc at the collections under his direction.
I really enjoyed the three days and was suprised how settled I felt behind the wheel or an artic. Messed up the first reverse into a factory bay but with a banks man helping me out I got it in eventually. Second reverse I did I got first time reversing in a bit of a u-turn off a main road through a yard gate around an office building into the yard.
The experience of actually going to different factories and physically setting up the trailer for steel plate, coils in the coil well etc was invaluable. Also I had plenty of practice at sheeting the loads! Also at some of the places health and safety is through the roof so I had to wear hardhat, ear protection, eye protection, long sleeves and be harnessed to a platform before I was allowed to climb onto the trailer. To say i was sweating in all that kit for over an hour is an under statment! lol So in the end I took the spare week as a positive as I now think ill be a lot better prepared for what ill have to do day to day in the job.
That said… I was expecting to finally go to the yard today to put my stuff into my hire wagon for starting tomorrow morning but… you guessed it… dad got a phone call and it was his boss again… the wagon wont be there till 7am Tuesday morning!
I know its only a day late but after being let down for a week already and psyching myself up for my start day it feels like a kick in the balls again.
But anyway… I just keep telling myself that he doesnt have to give me a job and hes doing me a huge favor and I should still feel positive that I do have a job to go to… eventually lol.
I shall be putting a diary on here to let you know what I experience day to day etc and piccies of the wagon ill be using. I might even do some you tube videos if I dont just immediately sleep everytime I stop driving for the day haha
Im in a plain hire wagon this week but will have one of the companies units the fortnight after that as a driver is on holiday.
Anyway just thought id share my slightly stressful start to my first class 1 job.
