Hi Gary
This is one of a double post see here;
footy:
hello Ian Norman Foot here, good to hear you are on the ball. have been tempted to put a few things straight particularly on the Gulfsped and Poole before the tourist sites, wish i still had that BMW we had from you. Regards Norman and Jennie.
Dear Norman. How good to hear from you. What a good man you always were.I’m glad that you and your other half are well. Are you retired or retiring(even).

Dear Richard and Maggie,
The F89 is being driven by the new(er) owner.I believe he tows a rather fine wooden boat with it.Before I parted with it,I was given(yes) a brand new engine and gearbox by Volvo,so it should go well for a long time.It was a fine truck, that did several Bosnia trips. If only F89s were made now,I would but a couple!

Hello Ian,
Nice to hear from you hope you are keeping well, the F89 you brought from me is still going strong ! I was down Gold Hill the other day but didn’t see you !!swazie1 Alan, youve got a good memory, and kerbut you are correct but I’m not sure who the driver was in the pic but will try and find out, here it is again.
Regards
Richard
Dear Gary,
The Rycroft household is configured a little differently now-from the one you remember.I find this a while back.Good pic of The Joker, but otherwise a little inaccurate!

Ian R:-Well well tis been a long time since I’ve heard anything about you,I hope all is good with you,as for the people from your past .a lot of us meet once a year, just to talk over old times,It make for a good night…Martin Stevenson and myself work together now in the medical side of trucking.I will tell him that you are on this site and maybe he wil look it up.Anyway best reguards to you feller…Steve Holland…
Merged the double posts into one topic…
Good show Rikki.
Thanks for the link Ian. Thank you for the email too.
WELL,WELL,WELL,HELLO OLD TIMER,NICE TO SEE YOU ON HERE,DONT KNOW HOW GOOD YOUR MEMORY IS NOW IAN,I WAS DRIVING FOR JIM SQUIBB IN THE DAYS WHEN I FIRST MET YOU AND YOUR GOOD LADY, YOU WERE RUNNING AMO IN THOSE DAY AND THE LAST I HEARD YOU WERE LIVING JUST DOWN THE ROAD FROM ME,I WAS LIVING IN LUDWELL AND YOU WERE IN SHAFTESBURY,BUT I DIDNT HAVE AN ADDRESS, ALL I KNOW WAS THAT YOU WERE NEAR THE HOSPITAL,ONE OF MY EARLY FRIENDS CAME ON FOR YOU, HIS NAME WAS CHRIS, THINK HE MOVED OVER TO THE CHANNEL ISLAND, WAS WITH YOU FOR YEARS, IF YOUR STILL IN CONTACT WITH HIM PLS PASS MY REGARDS TO HIM,I NO LONGER LIVE DOWN IN SHAFTESBURY, AM LIVING IN NORFOLK MATE,HOPE EVERYTHING IS FINE FOR YOU IAN,AND LOOK FOREWARD TO MEETING UP WITH YOU ONE DAY PERHAPS, TAKE GOOD CARE OF YOURSELF,(HE WHO DARES WINS)BEV WYATT.
I am very happy to make contact with all who have posted, again.I have spend most of my time where internet is either non existent or dailup! Please excuse my lateness in replying.
I am now back in UK/Europe for a few weeks,having been in Iraq and DRC(Congo) again.Some years ago I designed and built a 500 lit/hr continuous biodiesel machine,for UNHCR.It’s still working-somehow-in Goma in DRC.British engineering,I hope.
Now that I am hope,I’m doing some research into hydrogen injection into diesel engines,to improve fuel efficiency. The first trial has just started on a Deutz watercooled diesel.I’ll keep everyone posted. The hydrogen is generated from water(and a reactant Sodium Hydroxide),and the generator sits beside the diesel engine.Others make rather extravagant claims for this technology,so I am trying to determine if it works, and how well!
I expect to be in Poole later this year,to attend a dinner at 148 Bty RA(FOU).Some one from there tracked me down, and invited me.I got to know this unit well, having some under command, during the Dhofar War.
I am still looking for the right niche in the UK transport scene, and never say never. ‘‘Who cares who dares’’

I’d love to know what you mean by “contunuous”? I make bio diesel commercially but can’t get to grips with a continuous process.

I’ve also tried this on a Sprinter van, we tried one Hydrogen generator with no obvious benefit but with two there was a definate improvement in performance, this was best seen when driving north on the M6 up ‘Keel Bank’. Previously you would need to plant the pedal on the floor to maintain 70mph up the hill, but with the hydrogen it simply shot up as if it were on the flat with no more ‘pedal pressure’ needed.
For the benefit of the test (a round trip to Kenilworth to pick a motorbike up) we ran it from a transparent fuel tank in the back of the van. I filled it before leaving and drove down without Hydrogen, I marked it when I arrived & filled it again, then loaded the bike then drove back with the Hydrogen gennies on.
I don’t have the actual figures here but I’m certain it used just under a litre less coming home with the Hydrogen on & very lightly loaded (prob no more than 220 - 250 kilo’s) but still a definate gain.
Good luck with your research,
Ross.
Dear Ross,
The continuous bio diesel machine was made from a design, done at Cambridge Uni(in glass!!).here’s a lin k that should enable you to track down the document:
Process Intensification of Biodiesel Production using a Continuous
Oscillatory Flow Reactor”

I made the thing out of stainless steel(316) tubing. The biggest problem was getting the water out of the finished product,to bring it to an acceptable level.I replaced the electrical motors with pneumatic ones,to reduce the hazard of the catalyst etc.
On the HHO generator side,I am producing about 1 Lit of hydrogen per 8A with the device I have. One key is the contact area of the plates with the water has to be quite large. So far I’m getting about 9% fuel saving on a Deutz diesel of 4.4 lit capacity.I have been gradually uprating the ammount of Sodium Hydroxide,to get the hydrogen volume up(and hopefully the fuel consumption downto a better level).I’ll keep the forum posted.

hi ian my name is steve, so good to see you on this forum at last… i remember your fleet very well, as a young lad i used to hang out at the docks gates in poole with a buddy of mine, watching the trucks come and go… i remember yours being parked outside furnells garage sometimes, i seem to remember a young guy called andy working there, ex m.o.d. iirc…particularly your kw, it seemed to be there a lot ,lol… always fascinated me though…
quick memory test for you,do you remember two young lads stopping you in your black bmw to tell you someone had taken the k40 antenna of the back…i was ine of those lads, lol…
anyways, once again great to see such an icon of the british haulage industry back in action, good luck with all your future endevours, keep in touch with us on here…
all my best,
steve.
Ian, thanks for the reply & I’m sorry it took so long for me to ‘get back’. My laptop ‘took the knock’ and I only bought a new one today, so I’m back.
My interpretation of the term “Continuous process” was incorrect, we actually use a ‘continuous recirculation’ reactor, it’s a cone bottom vessel that we built to our own spec. We also use a pneumatic pump to introduce the ‘meth-oxide’ for safety reasons.
Our only water problems are the usual oil & meth’-oxide issues, we water wash our bio-diesel and keep the finished product heated for 12hrs after the wash process is finished.
Obviously, purchasing UCO is our biggest issue at the moment, with some sellers asking for 70p per litre!!! Where will it end??
Best regards,
Ross.
I have been conducting some experiments in fuel saving for diesel engines. The test was conducted on a static Deutz 4 cyl turbo diesel(water cooled!),attached to a Trommel screening machine, working with green waste(under heavy load). After discovering that the owner never bothered with maintenance, and getting that sorted out,the initial test results were:
Spec of engine:
deutz.com/live_deutz_product … n+0903.pdf
Test result;
Engine:Deutz 4 cyl water cooled turbo diesel around 147 BHP
Model:BF 4M 2012
Location:Comvert site
Use:McCloskey crusher,under heavy load.
Without HHO:17.00 lit/hr
With HHO: 9.4lit hour
Test over one hour.Longer test 5hr+ underway now.
date of Test; 18 03.11
Although the test area was very dusty, this is,of course,a test of an engine running at constant revs, unlike a truck. However I shall begin an experiment on an F12 shortly, and advise the results!
