Mersey Tunnels (Wallasey) - Weight/Length Restriction

Old tunnel like the tyne tunnel, full of smoke & bends. Built in 1934 I believe. Has a 7.5t & a 13’ . ?‘’ height on it. A41 / M53 junction (Vauxhall junction ).

Wallasey’s only two weighers both ends and adr pull-in on the L’pool side.
Likewise, l’ve seen that 11t sign. Probably go back to the days when Laird’s or SMM’s where pushing marine engineering components through the pipe for export.

But some tractor units have 11,500 KG rated Drive Axles, making even more vehicles ‘Prohibited’

Correct, you can’t take an 11,5t axle through Dartford either, still plenty do…

Doesn’t make it legal though.

Ugh. Got a load from Glasgow to Birkenhead on Monday, was just checking out the tunnel info as my planner says to use it (of course, I fully trust her… :unamused:  ) - so there’s an unsigned 38T MGW restriction, and a signed 11T axle restriction? Both of which are endorseable offences if plod are having a bad day, right?

Will be ~44T, with an 11.5T rated drive axle. I guess it’s M6, M56, M53 for the long way round?

You should be okay to go through still. Think the 38 tonne is an old restriction, I’ve been through loads of times carrying tanks loaded with toluene at 44t and had to stop at the tunnel police, they’ve never had any issues with weight etc

Big Roy:
The only weight limit sign is an 11T axle limit, very cleverly positioned just as you enter the tunnel with no-where else to go

Spot on, it’s even posted after the dangerous and wide loads bay
