Anyone got news on whether Meridian Metals has been saved or not? They went into administration last month and I heard that some big steel company are buying them out, but I’ve seen nothing in the news since the admins being appointed. I’ve never worked for them directly but done a lot of agency work with them; nice trucks and nice long day runs across country. They’re based in Dudley but I know the Guildford plant and they’ve got a few others (Sheffield I think).

There was a piece in the local newspaper about it. I’ll see if I can find it.

I heard that the staff were being paid to sit on their hands because the company could not get supplies of steel but they were hoping to sell the business. (This is what I was told when I asked my contact why I wasn’t seeing their trucks around.)

Cool, I hope I’ll get a bit more work out of them now!

Well, learned today that the site I used to work at (Normandy) is being closed after all, despite all the talk about “no job losses” when the business was bought out of administration. (New owner is in fact Duferco, a Luxembourg-based company whose main operating base is in Switzerland.)
Best job I did – even though it was agency, it was all over the south, Dorset, Somerset, Norfolk, even the Midlands. Got to see some places with that company. Nice vehicles (all Scanias except for the little Japanese 7.5-tonner), relaxed attitude as long as the work got done. It makes some sense given that it was in an awkward location and most of the places they delivered to (except the south coast) could be as well served out of Dudley. But I’m sad I’ll never work there again.
