Mercedes-Benz automated truck

looks great.

Robotruck

fine until it decides to lose its gears going down a long steep hill towards static traffic

I’ll be long retired before they hit the roads, bridges, cyclists…

while its crashing and killing, i bet its nice and safe inside the cab! the windscreen will cover so you won’t have to see the carnage and it’ll play some nice calming music for you

something totally at odds with the mayhem all around like the Skaters Waltz instead of the more appropriate 1812 Overture complete with cannons :grimacing:

Nah it will be fine because there will be no driver in it. The computer will manage to use the brakes etc without causing brake fade.
Computers are far better than some drivers these days. They have a brain.

Oh and it does not get road rage and drive like a bell end.

Obviously as we know the technology is pretty much here already, but as the spokesman said the driver is still in charge so does that mean the driver will be held responsible and if so then he can’t really turn round and start messing around on his ipad (although that doesn’t stop some doing so on present trucks)

I believe they see these trucks being automated only for motorways, which means they haven’t quite got the automation to cope with towns, rural roads and depots, so while it might be ok to work on the long stretches of road in the US can it really work on the crowded network in some parts of Europe including the UK?

Bring it on. These things are not gonna replace a real driver any time soon but if they can take the monotony out of motorway driving then I say good luck to them.

Although I’d still prefer a Scammel with a 50 speed Eaton Quad Splitter, no heaters and a bed across the engine.
