Merc Axor

What a heap of zb…!

Your considered opinion based on■■?

We have been running a new one for six months now on mixed heavy and light work and is out performing in fuel economy the Actros’s and Stralis’s that we have had in the past by at least 10%. The cab is adequate for occasional nights out but obviously not up to megaspace standards.

Based in this basically:

Merc Axor new model= Hitlers revenge, What a crap truck to drive, Hard seat, narrow bunk, that would take geoff capes to lift it up, and it lacks any kind of support like hydralic rams to hold the thing up whilst you access anything stored under the bunk.and then there is that anoying hump( engine tunnel) and also that sad cargo net where the top bunk would be, that gets in your way if you wish to sit on your bunk and say watch tv, there isnt enough space in the axor cab for a tramper, they maybe ok as a trolley dolly 8hrs shift, but no good for anything else i would vote them the worst truck
the auto gearbox has only one goal to reach 12th cog ASAP in the name of economy, sod drivabilty especicaly if there is a incline or worse still a steep hill , it also lacks power from its 430 engine, the mirrors aren’t good either, it’s nearley as bad as one of those old actrosses with a board covered with cloth for a bunk

& this…

I drove an older model, horrible thing. Brakes are bottle caps. Its wallows about everywhere, the whole thing shudders at low speeds, the clutch is crap, the gearbox is crap. It was riddled with electrical faults. The cab smelt of TCP oddly enough. Maybe I’m judging it harshly because the one I was driving was a shed.

My views on the 63 plate ones (1840, Low roof, auto box) we’ve got on loan from Tesco.

  • Auto Box - Crap. No other word. Random neutrals, changing in the wrong direction, takes way too long pick gears.

  • Seat - Not really enough room for my legs between seat and steering column (I’m 6’4"). If it’s set at the right height for my legs to be comfortable my eyes are level with the top of the windscreen, absolute [zb] when you’re driving into the sun and you need the visor down, feels like you’re driving a tank. Seat pad is really uncomfortable after more than a few hours driving.

  • Bed - If I get on the bed, my feet are flat against the one window and I’ve almost got my head against the other side.

  • Engine hump is quite high compared to a CF or a G series.

  • Speakers in Doors - The speaker is right where most blokes catch the door with their boot and so is normally smashed.

  • Radio - By Tacho above the windscreen, great, unless you want to plug your MP3 or such like in and then it’s dangling in front of you as there’s nowhere to put it.

  • Lights - the top marker lights on the cab shine on the top of the mirrors.

It’s a supermarket truck. It’s basic, cheap and easy to repair. Just not well thought out from a drivers perspective.

The axor is a ‘right’ motor, not a scania or a Volvo, but much better than the other’s in the same category.

The only truck I’ve disliked driving was the old cf, the gear box was slow as bajingo & steered like a diplodocus.

Agree about the cf, drove a 10 plate auto the other day, ■■■■■■ terrible gearbox, bad steering lock.
Was disappointed not to see a ‘bulled up’ axor at truckfest.

I’d have a CF over a zb axor any day!
