Merc Axor 1840 auto (63 plate)

The gearbox in these (auto 16 speed I think), do they have an overdrive function on them? I’m driving one for the first time tonight and it seems to be revving its ■■■■ off! Seems unable to block change aswell. Very strange, will be writing a newbie review on here if I get chance.

Thats what they do, they are zb trucks mate, should only have 12 gears if it’s auto & no other special functions, good luck…

Yeah 12 foward, I was counting reverse and crawler aswell if it has them. Thought I was doing something wrong, still trying to figure out all the functions and switches. Lots of annoying niggles so far but I’ll give it a few hours and see how I get on with it.

Turn off the exhaust brake

i had a 2543 Axor for 2 days in November, and ended up driving it in manual. If you drive it in auto with the exhaust brake lever on, the rev counter will nearly go off the clock when it changes down. It revs too high changing down and revs too high changing up, hence sticking it in manual. Not too bad then tbh, stick the exhaust brake on manually only when you want it.

Figured that out in the end  kept getting it confused with the cruise control! Surely Mercedes could of done better! Settling into it a bit now. It’s nice to drive something different and add it to my experience but I’m still yet to be convinced about them. Feels comfy enough now I’ve pi$$ed about with the seat for half hour, can’t help feeling a bit cramped though.

Nearly chopped me fingers off aswell when the left hand armrest gave way, trapping my fingers between the arm rest and gear lever arm thing!

Is that common then

Another question:

Why is there a big surge of air when I take the service line off when uncoupling? When I pull the park brake button on the trailer there’s no loud rush of air as the brakes are applied (as is the case when I’m driving a Scania) then when I take the yellow line off there’s a big release of air which sounds like the brakes applying?

I get that on my Actros. Sometimes the trailer jumps about the place as well.

Yeah same here, not brilliant when split coupling. It doesn’t really do it when coupling up but when uncoupling it can give a good jerk.

Yeah at Tesco but with ESL. The Stobart Scanias have mostly been replaced with brand new mercs and a few DAFs. Not sure how long they are here for. Aparantly the same happened last year so not sure if they’re here to stay or not.

Scanias don’t apply the trailer brakes when you have the unit handbrake on, therefore there’s no pressure in the yellow airline. Everything else (I think) does, therefore the yellow airline is pressurised to whatever pressure to jam the brakes on.

On that note. Make sure the box is in neutral when you switch off to get out to couple up. The extra amount of air you waste to put the brakes can leave you with not enough air to put the box in neutral when you go to start it and the unit then has a hissy fit [technical term].

We’re at ESL/Tesco Widnes. We’ve got a load of Merc Axors and Daf CFs. All brand spanking. Don’t know where the Mercs came from but the DAFs came from Livingston with delivery miles only.

The last time it happened was because Scania didn’t have our new four wheelers ready in time. Allegedly.

Rumour grenades everywhere

Strange that stobart are running DAFs, never understood why they don’t have them in their regular fleet, might all be just for Christmas like other firms are doing at this time of year by renting etc…

Cheers for clearing that up Phil

On another note regarding new trucks, I got talking to a bloke off days and he said they weren’t getting replaced so who knows. Everything is but a rumour until it happens in reality. Will keep my ear to the ground :sunglasses:

Mercedes Axor.

Proof that the Germans do have a sense of humour…
