Yes I know them they’re fine I know a couple of there instructors Andrew and Ronnie. If they are local to you I recommend you to use them.

Other options are me at Elmet Driver Training and Lawrie at Tockwith.

I would recommend you to have at least 2 assessment drives.

Hope this helps

They Are about half an hours drive from me, but as I’m not the one who’s going to be paying then I don’t have much choice un the matter.

All the best with it all where ever you go.

Paddy runs Melmerby, used to work for us, his instructor Andrew also used to work for us! and same as Paul who posted above (learn from the best maybe??), Paddy is a bit like Marmite - i suggest you have an assessment first, our new automatic volvo’s are lovely, Paddy has manual Volvo’s but Paul’s advice to try us all out is a great idea, i can’t recommend try before you buy enough, DO AN ASSESSMENT and then its your informed decision.

i understand you might not want to pay for 3 assessments, so just ask to speak to me and i’ll sort out something for you. see picture below for your potential training truck!

I paid for a Class 1 assessment drive with them. Decent Volvo unit and I liked the instructor’s manner and banter. Lots of good country roads around Ripon and some fun, tight twisty stuff through towns and over little bridges.

The office is a portacabin, not that that’s a problem. I seem to remember I turned down a coffee so I can’t comment on that.

The quote was a bit steep so I doubt I will go back. When I told the trainer what I paid Peter Smythe for Cat C he couldn’t understand how Pete managed to do it at that price (Christmas discount!)

Basically, I thought I’d try them because they’re close and I was chomping at the bit to drive an artic! I haven’t actually done my Class 1 yet (moving house instead) but, when the time comes, I will be using Peter Smythe again. Free B&B if over 70 miles away and another little holiday in Mansfield appeals - especially now Pete has added an auto Artic to the fleet.

Just out of curiosity, how much would an assessment drive be?

I trained with Tockwith’s many years ago. It was a professional setup with good staff and instructors.

Thanks smokingbarrels, we are proud of our professional team that work so hard to create success, because our success depends on them. Not everyone understands our approach to driver training but those that have used us will always recommend our services to others, without recommendation we could not provide the quality of training that we think customers deserve.

Yes Tockwith are fine if I get any enquires regarding bus training I pass on there number.

Thanks Paul, Since the Automatic rule change it seems that the Bus is not out training every day, say 50% drop, all those that gained an auto bus licence with the local bus companies can now just apply to the DVLA to become coach drivers with manual licence upgrade, just send off the application. Our next vehicle to buy will be an automatic bus/coach.

We did that a while ago. Waste of time learning on a manual bus/coach now.

I did my class 2 with tockwith funded by myself, a really nice bloke with half an arm taught me, amazing watching him change gear. Then did my class 1 with Melmerby funded by my employer, bloke who “taught” me kept nodding off quite funny really.
