MAY

Contrary to what many believe. not all medicals are done at age 45, 50 ,55 etc - the 5 yearly expiry date of the medical is from when is was last done - unless there are special provisions set by DVLA

You should have received the forms six weeks before your fiftieth birthday and you need to have a medical before then. The May 2010 thing is probably when the photo on your driving licence expires, you are being invited to do this at the same time. It won’t save any money but it will save having to jump through hoops again next year.

I was fifty last month myself but I still cling to the hope that it’s all a bad dream!

Sorry Harry but that is not always the case - it is not always done by an exact age.

For example - a driver has first medical and LGV test at age 42 - their next medicals will be age 47, 52, 57 etc
Another example - first medical at age 30 (which lasts till age 45) but the driver does not drive LGVs until age 48 so that is when they choose to take a medical to re-instate their LGV licence - the following medical will be at ages 53, 58 etc

Hi Alf,
Adding to the answers already given, it’s also possible that you might not have received a notification if you’ve moved house, but not told DVLA about it…

To clarify: the date the photo expires is shown on the front (4b), the date a driving category was issued and expires is shown on the reverse alongside the code.

Ah yes but Alf has been doing it for years, and for us old boys, it’s 45, 50, 55 etc…

In that case, a second look at the licence would be a prudent move just to double check the expiry date. That date will be the one to go by.

If you try to tell DVLA otherwise it will confuse them !!!

you can download the medical form off the dvla website and is accepted by them.
