Ive just had to renew the photo on my licence. Came back in a week no drama.
However my old licence had my HGV expiring a day before my 45th birthday in 2027. I thought this made sense due to needing a medical at 45.
My new licence has my HGV expiring in 2030 some three years later when I’ll be 47/not far off 48.
What gives in terms of medical? Will i get a letter near 45 or will i get the letters when my licence is due to lapse when im 47?
Normal if your photo renewal expires before your 45th birthday I was the same 5 years later on new licence. Nothing to worry about but does make a mockery of the system saying you need it at 45 then extending it. Something along those lines though I can’t remember the exact reason why it changes the date your medical is due.
Iirc it’s usually if your photo card expires more then 56 days before your 45th birthday. It’s something along those lines from memory but I can’t find the info I found at the time when it happened to me.
Cheers only thing i can think of is medical is due at next renweal after 45 not precisely at 45 to renew but it’s not clear as you say and makes a bit of a mockery of the medical at 45 thing. I mean in that case if you fluke the timing you could almost get t0 50 before needing a medical
My HGV renewal is now 2027 after checking my licence. So I renewed mine in 2022 and checking it was in July. So before I was 45 and over 56 days from it expiring. So because I renewed it it made my medical become due when I’m 49 nearly 50. Crazy rules but there you goz they automatically send out the medical form when they are supposed to generally. Hence why I never got the form as I wasn’t 45 at the time.
It is a bizarre situation that could be rectified by just making everyone renew at 45 with a medical whether your licence has several years left or not.
So yes your medical will be due in 5 years time when your next renewal is due, and then every 5 years after that.
The rules are you need a medical at age 45 and every 5 years thereafter for heavy goods vehicles. So it should be everyone at 45 but the stupid DVLA system means the for some it gets extended dependant on when your licence runs out and you age at that point and how far from your 45th birthday you are. 56 days or less and yes you need a medical 56 days or more and you don’t until your next renewal date.
It is convoluted and no wonder this topic crops up every now and again. I was in the same boat as yourself as I said when I renewed my photo card. I even posted similar on her myself at the time as I didn’t understand why it changed either.
My 1st one was last march when I was 48 as I renewed my licence when I was still 44 , my birthday is in July and this one is my 50th
I had this , it’s like everything , fine until something goes wrong & they investigate & find out you’ve not had a medical when you should have had one .
