HI all
I have always wondered what the difference is between the following wording with in the transport industry. Can any body assist??logistics… Logistics is the management of the flow of goods between the point of origin and the point of consumption in order to meet some requirements
transport…Transport or transportation is the movement of people, animals and goods from one location to another.
haulage…Haulage generally refers to the business of being a haulier (UK English) or hauler (US English), also called haulage contractor
Distribution …Distribution is the process of making a product or service available for use or consumption by a consumer or business userCheers

Logistics is what transport used to be before managers started having degrees from university instead of a degree of experience and common sense.
so now we know
When I started I worked for a family firm that provided transport (council work and a bit of gen work) …
Then I moved into distribution was one type of product ie kitchen and bathrooms
The I moved into gen Haulage for a family rung gen haulage contractor
and as for logistics I did do a session of picking up raw product at farms and delivering the final finished product to the consumer …
Call it what you like but at the end it’s all the same … moving stuff from one place to another

‘Logistics’ would appear to be a word often adopted by some parties in the haulage world in a bid to present themselves as bigger or more important than they really are.

When I was serving, logistics meant, “Supply”, as in transport used to supply the front line with fuel, grub and ammunition.
What used to be the Royal Corps of Transport, (In which my dad served during the war),has now been merged with The Royal Army Ordnance Corps and other units and is called, “The Royal Logistics Corps”.
I think people over recent years have tried to update expressions in the industry, like using truck instead of lorry, and logistics instead of haulage.
