hi all. Could anyone tell me if all hauliers are obliged to pay a meal allowance to drivers like stobarts do? Might sound like a strange question but i just wondered why a big haulier like them would pay if they didnt have to? Ta. Chris
Nope, no obligation to pay a meal allowance, it’s a sensible thing to do though because the driver doesn’t pay PAYE or NI on it, so it would be better for a driver to earn £87 a day and get a £3 meal allowance than to earn £90 a day.
It’s a Tax dodge! By companies who try to save pennies off their staff! 
For the driver it don’t matter unless the amount is seen as part of wage! Then doing long hours (12+ hours) starts working at a loss!
