So, I passed my test yesterday (Cat C) and as I’ve got the week off, I thought I would do a bit of job searching. I gave up in the end and I really don’t want to register with agencies except as a last resort. I found a website listing Hauliers in the UK and filtered them down to my area. I then proceeded to email the ones I recognised explaining that I have only just passed my test but was keen to work and a brief outline of my personal experience (I was a courier for a few years and now I drive buses). 6 Minutes later, I get an email back from a particular company (One which I’ve had my eye on actually) which is from the Owner himself explaining that they do employ new drivers and that their insurance covers them for it. Not only that but they have a Class 2 vacancy - would I like to come along for an interview on Monday or Tuesday which is super handy because I have both of these days off as rest days…fingers crossed.
So guys, get them emails and feelers out there, don’t necessarily rely on companies listing their vacancies on their websites or on-line, go straight for the jugular
Nice one! A perfect start to your trucking career.
I’m still working with the agencies, they’re not so bad if you just accept that they’re using you the same as you’re using them. I’m well on the way to building the magic 2 years of experience which is probably the first target of all us rookie drivers.
All the best to you, and well done for your initiative.

Because I’m still in work, I guess I could afford to be a little bit picky and not dive straight for the agencies. I will admit that I was surprised to get the response I did as quickly as I did, I’ve been really lucky.
