Does anybody remember McLauchlan Plant or McLauchlan (Knottingley) Ltd?
Yorkhire building, civil engineering and plant hire company.
Traded from just after the second world war until the 1990’s
Lots of tippers plus low-loaders, tankers, other vehicles
Blue and yellow livery (usually blue cabs + yellow bodies)
Has anybody got any photos, stories, etc
I would love to hear/see them
Dear Canveytipper,
It’s a long time ago, but I remember them very well. In the early 1960s, I subcontracted to McLaughlan, driving a small bulldozer on the very first Keighley bypass. Then I went on to work for them at Ledsham - on Brotherton Ings. One of their plant mechanics, Billy Grant, is a friend of mine. I think that the plant manager was also called Ken.
Hi Kenny
Thanks for your recollections.
The Ken you were talking about was he a big man called Ken Hollingsworth?
My late father was ultimately in charge of the plant and became a director of the company.
Mick Sutcliffe. Maybe you remember him?
hi all
were McLAUCHLAN PLANT behind the transport café on the knottingley to Pontefract rd as you turned off the old A1■■
regards

Hi SM1
I am not quite sure where you mean.
Possibly Glasby’s garage which had a cafe with lots of truck parking behind.
Not aware of McLauchlans ever having a yard there although their drivers probably frequented it regularly
McLauchlans also built the housing estate directly behind the cafe
Their main yard was in the centre of town right on the main Pontefract to Goole road (A645?)
They also had a limestone quarry in Cridling Stubbs between Womersley and Darrington
Did lots of work for NCB and CEGB
Slurry pond work, coal washing, pit heap reclamation, etc
Would love any old pics of the famous blue and yellow trucks

Only took the one photo 1986, thinking that I would return to get more, stupid idea that I have learnt many times since then and still miss out!!! Too many places and trucks to try and phot, with so little time to do it in, such is life.
Will tonight, put more photos of MAN 240 tippers from around the area on Yorkshire Companies site

HI all, I remember Mc Lauchlans from my days at Elliotts of York. We bought an old Scammell lowloader from them, LBO909. The trailer was severely bent from constant over loading and was affectionately know as the “banana boat”. They also ran an S21 Foden (Mickey Mouse) 6x4 tractor unit 220 ■■■■■■■■ if my memory serves me correct it was a left ■■■■■■ ! Regards Tony H.
Crikey I had forgotten about the old Scammell although I remember the 6x4 Foden well. Yes it was a leftie.
After that I think they used Volvos and/or Scanias.
Not 100% certain.
Any other information/reminiscences/photos would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Graham
This has the old grey matter bubbling I remember them racing through Camblesforth village with Dodges loaded with sand to Drax power station very early 60s always remember blue and yellow livery .
thank you for your recollections.
i remember the 4x2 dodges very well
they ran them also with MASSIVE greedy boards when carrying fly ash from the other local power stations
previous to that they ran commers i think
as well as a mixture of other 6x4’s (leyland reivers i think) and 8x4’s (atkinsons?)
they then went on to 6x4 dodges, 6x4 long-bonnet magirus-deutz’s and 8x4 maggies
then on to 8x4 MAN’s
i don’t know what they ran after that as i moved away
any more info/ any pics anybody?
