no pictures but i remember them, some were dark blue and others were silver cab with orange bodies, but it might have been the other way round.they had quite a few wagons parked all around the outside of the factory.my dad had a mate who drove there and we used to go to their social club which was very good.sad to see it now empty.cant under stand why the factory doesnt do better nowadays with the metal recycling doing well.and their canteen was delicious

can only remember them being orange and silver my uncle colin mason drove for them for a few years after pittsteel went bust just down the rd from s jones,he and my dad was there for about 12 years, who was yr dads mate that drove for mckechnies as we knew a few of the drivers there.

Would this have been formally known as McKechnie Brothers as I seem to recall taking some machinery there in the 60s sorry no photos

Yes Johnnie, It was McKechnie bros, besides the main Aldridge factory they also had a place in Ditton rd Widnes, this building is still there with their name on the front. The lorries as I remember them were red and silver, I used to see a couple of their drivers Norman and his brother in law John in London, they delivered to the same engineering factories as I did for Delta metals. In the late 90’s they were bought out by a Finnish firm Boliden.

the leylands were wincanton and a couple of ec11 erf six wheelers, then back to mckechnie again they had 2 daf 85 six leggers, then the scanias till jan 2014 the 2 drivers on the dafs were old mckechnie drivers john colley and dave don’t know surname.

John Colley is my Dad and he worked at Mckechnie’s for over thirty years. When I was a kid he had a Bedford and I used to love to go in the six wheeler TM. Early nineties, I think '91 they were bought out by Boliden and became Boliden MKM the livery then changed from silver cabs red bodies to white cabs with blue bodies. My dad then had a Leyland Freighter, I even remember the reg, H919 ADH. All the lorries were tippers incidentally as they would collect loose swarf to bring back to Aldridge to be manufactured into brass bar.

When Boliden took over, the transport was contracted out to Wincanton. After the Leylands the fleet became a mixture of Daf 65/75’s and ERF EC’s. After 10 years or so Boliden sold the company to Outo Kumpo then it became Bolton Brass before new owners then decided to re name it McKechnie Metals until they went into receivership in late December 2013.

Over the years the fleet dwindled and my dad and Dave Smith were the only two remaining drivers. They both had Daf 85 six wheeler drawbars pulling a three axle A-frame trailer with a front steering axle with demountable bodies doing regular runs to Scotland. They both retired in 2013 and as mentioned, the Daf’s were replaced by Scanias. Hope this helps!
