Maybe a new chapter with Maritime?

At Maritime, though their cameras are not on a livestream to the boss’s house, neither do they only record 15 seconds either side of a harsh braking. They’re recording all the time, and can be viewed if the SD card is removed and plugged into a manager’s computer. That’s how some drivers have been sacked for smoking in the cab. They hold about 72 hours of footage then overwrite.

Well they must use a different system but from what I know 95% of places use the system it only records if u harsh brake or ie have a crash and in all fairness I used too smoke but never in the cab so they deserve to be sacked In my opinion

Managers are alerted by harsh brake incidents, and do investigate every one by looking at the cameras, but they can also pop the SD card out at any time to check. Whether or not they do this is anybody’s guess.

95% of what or which ‘‘places’’ Maritime depots or firms in general?
Your first post implied that you knew what you were on about, or that you worked at Maritime…especially by your use of the lol emojis. :unamused:
It appears that you don’t.
Most of us are aware of the type of cameras that are only activated by harsh braking, but the constant, or random surveillance type are a complete different concept, and imo a step too far… …so what was your point exactly?

As for your smoking point, I don’t smoke, and I hate it if anybody smokes in ‘‘my’’ truck, but to sack somebody for it , really ?
A bit ott I reckon.
The last time somebody smoked in ‘‘mine’’ he was billed by the firm for the stuff I bought to get rid of the stink, (I purposely bought the most expensive) then I booked 2 to 3 hours pay for getting it back to how I left it.

Fair play I used too smoke but wouldn’t even smoke in my own car too my knowledge most cameras only record after harsh brakes or an impact detected by the vehicle but anyway I would have no issues being watched because I do nothing that would get me into bother

Pros: They take anyone, “9 points OK” culture. Cons: They don’t pay well. Who goes to work for the kit?

I didn’t know they’d installed driver-facing cameras since I last worked there (2012) - but I’m in no hurry to ever go back there. H&S observance is terrible, at least around the Tilbury area! :open_mouth: :frowning:

if you dont work there . how do you know what the current pay is.? and whats the problem with an internal camera unless your playing with your phone. i can see it wont be long before they are compulsory. in all trucks .and id rather drive a clean new truck than some piece of trash thats not serviced properly.

I often find myself servicing and cleaning any grubbyness in the truck myself - on my own walkaround checks, as I’m not under time pressure to “get it done in 15 minutes flat” any longer. I prefer it this way - as my combination is then entirely down to me and my own efforts with it. I won’t be complacent about anything. I used to be horrified for example, waiting around at Tilbury Docks, watching other drivers with their tractors rush about the place, not observing anywhere enough safety aspects, often with clear signs of “insufficnent walkaround checks” what with headlamp bulbs totally blown, and nothing done about it… Imo “Rush rush rush” to some kind of unnecessary schedule - is more likely to cause “forced errors”, that then puts others around one in danger as well. There’s been plenty of drivers killed around tilbury docks doing “split coupling” on the fly for instance, as well. Is it worth it for the pay full timers get? - Imo NO - but at least I got to find out for myself working there on agency in 2012 as I did. Pay back then was £9ph, and these days I’m on £12ph for the same shifts I would have been on there. I doubt if pay has gone up 33% in 8 years - but I stand to be corrected of course.

I’m not saying that the poor safety record is all about truckers at Maritime in particular cutting corners - but EVERYONE needs to keep an eye out for ANYONE doing their job cutting corners, or breaking regular safety rules that you wouldn’t be breaking anywhere else - right?

Being for or against “driver-facing cameras” is not the answer imo. A better and easier-going safety culture of NOT rushing everything you do - would save countless lives in the years to come.
Often so-called “pick up and drop windows” - don’t work to time, so why rush rush rush just to get there and end up booking ages in POA because you’re then struggling to find somewhere to park up and wait about the place? Downtons and Maritime are able to offer a more “just in time” service about Tilbury than most other hauliers, which in turn should improve further when the link road works are finished, even more so if the fresh river crossing to Shorne ever gets built as well of course…

Yep, he’s just gave it away with another version of …‘‘Well if you’re doing nothing wrong, what have you…etc etc’’
Looks like I fell for it.

When you think about it, it’s kinda true though. If you’re really doing nothing wrong, you’ve really got nothing to fear.

Or the other famous one …

(Ok I made that one up, but you get my drift)

Hi UKmember,

Can anyone please help me determine how bulk tipper driving loads are procured.

Does the work come from web sites such as ‘Return Loads’ ‘Haulage Exchange’ etc, or is it through sub-contracting from larger bulk tipper companies.

How are the loads that are being transported costed - MOT - Tarmac - Quarry materials - Construction debris ?

How is the owner driver paid for his services?

Your help would be very much appreciated

Hi Joe. Not sure which Maritime depot your from or what your role there is but you’re talking pish. Many of us on here know drivers personally who have been sacked after being caught doing various things on the in cab cameras.

Whether what they were doing was right or not is not the issue here, those cameras are running constantly when the ignition is on and can be viewed whenever the office bods feel like it.

Never said I worked for maritime lol [emoji1787]from my knowledge most cameras only recorded when harsh movements of the vehicle are detected I couldn’t care if I was being filmed because I know when I’m driving I’m doing nothing I shouldn’t be so anyone who gets the sack was clearly doing something they shouldn’t of been [emoji108]

Could not be arsed to comment on that mate tbh, you’re obviously too far gone, and beyond worth explaining to, about how many levels of wrong that covers.
Enjoy your driving career, you’ll go a long way with your future bosses, I’m certain of that.
I’m off to bang my swede against the nearest wall.

So you are one of the brainwashed then.

I don’t do anything wrong either, but guess what, I don’t want a camera 5 feet from my face watching me constantly.

I’m trusted with assault rifles, live ammunition, driving either one of the two and any other thing with no surveillance on me and I’m trusted to get on with my job. But I get in an artic for civi company driving shoes and I have several cameras watching what I’m doing. It’s ridiculous.

Companies wonder why they can’t recruit drivers, or decent ones at least, look at this kind of crap and they have their answer. Although I guess they don’t really care about good drivers, they just want mindless robots like yourself that repeat their crap, and believe it!
