Massive difference M.A.N repair costs

We recently had a unit lose all gears somewhere in kent.
Truck was taken to a local dealers…where it stayed for 2 days until it was decided it was gonna cost 6 grand to fix.
This was an 11 plate motor and will be one of the next to go…so the boss(also a main dealer)dragged it back.
Once back to our local garage,it was fixed with £100 quids worth of parts…and is now back on the road.
■■■■■■■ ridiculous.
Imagine if this happened to a one man band …running on a shoestring.

I thought one isn’t really allowed to run a truck on a shoestring, hence needing to show x amount in the bank when starting out or something!?

7k but as a new starter a 6k repair bill would put a big hole in that and then you would be running on a shoestring

7K … is that what you have to show you have as spare cash, to get an ‘O’ Licence? I would have never got started. When I bought my first truck I’m sure all I had to show was that I had past some exam (cpc? not the cpc of now) and somewhere sensible to park up. Used to drive it 6 days and maintain on the Sabbath - that’s what rest days are for aren’t they, pumping grease into all those ■■■■■■■. lol

Naa you just need to show you have access to it if needed, dont fancy putting 6k on a credit card though

Perhaps it was cos your unlikely to only apply for the just the one vehicle if you had access to funds.

I’ve thought about this when applying for mine? Surely you wouldn’t be able to use the available cash, as then… It’s not available so you aren’t meeting your licence undertakings :grimacing: and why don’t they stipulate any for trailers? It’s not like they can be any less well maintained :grimacing: it’s not like the TC would accept you had a defective tyre you hadn’t got the available funds :grimacing:

Swerve the banter, tell us what they did for $100 to fix it ? , please ?.

Dunno…sorry.

Changed a fuse…

Original dealer probably quoted for an exchange gearbox and recommended renewing the clutch at the same time. Parts in stock and hoped to turn vehicle around in a few hours.

OP’s boss dragged it home for £600? and then possibly stripped box down and perhaps renewed a selector fork, leaving any other gearbox issues untouched. Off road for three days altogether?

They reckoned it needed a new ecu

does’nt really work like that, of course you can use the funds needed for financial standing. You need to show an average over the 90 days of that figure

My boss put a m.a.n. unit into PCL Thurrock because it was shoving out lots of black smoke …this was after a very expensive EGR unit had just been fitted…so it never smoked before it went in…never smoked unit only, only after i had loaded an export load…so anyway they phoned to say it was the exhaust causing the problem !! it would cost £8500 to change the exhaust…another rip off…boss scrapped it and bought a DAF instead.

One of ours went into pcl larkfield yesterday with an abs fault and was told they could not check it with out a trailer . When the driver pointed out a trailer sat in there yard they said it was a hire trailer and if you wanted to use it to test the abs we wud have to hire it for the day . This was after explaining it was the truck at fault as our trailer was checked with another unit

My firm maintains its mans them selfs
My truck is an 18t auto on 08 and is still going strong
