Another massive difference is where your driving to,
Bradford, free for all does anyone actually have a licesne
London, good luck getting way better of tucking in your bunk at every junction. Oh and roundabout you will cut someone up but just put your hands up nout you can do
Newish driver here . Been driving nearly 4 years . Done a few jobs . Flt driver . Warehouse manager and plasterer .
What I’ve found out is the everyone with a hgv license is a back stabbing gob sh&te I’ve never known anything like it. Best mates when talking to each other then slagging each other like never . All the bitc£ing about people getting easier jobs or finishing earlier and the fact that every other driver is just waiting to grass you up .
I’ll be honest it’s not what I remembered going out with my uncle as a kid . Everyone’s just a co&k so I do my job and go home .

EVERYONE with a HGV licence?
That’s one hell of a generalisation mate.
I’ve got an HGV licence,.so I’ll.answer to your accusations.
Back stabber?
Never in my life, if I have anything to say it is always face to face and I’d rather help somebody than do them a bad turn.
Gob ■■■■■ …that is down to individual opinion , but I’d like to think not.
Best mates but slagging etc?
See my first answer.
■■■■■■■■?
Depends how you interpret ■■■■■■■■, I personally could not give a flying one what jobs (whether easy or hard ) any of my lot do, not interested,
I tend to concentrate on myself and making things better for myself.
Read many of my posts about looking after numero uno.
Grassing other drivers up?
I hate ‘grasses’ and yes men with a vengeance.
The closest I have ever come to grassing (and I still not consider it as such) is when I rang Stobarts up after my youngest daughter came in crying after one of their ■■■■ s ran her off the road, just a day after passing her test… But not before I went looking for the bast in my car first, but couldn’t find him.
So if you don’t mind mate, can you take this HGV licence holder off your sh. list. …I know numerous more btw.

It spoils the job but what can you do about it ?
There’s a few who might qualify for those terms, but on the whole i think not.
Maybe you’re in the wrong sector, do your colleagues stitch themselves into their hivis vests, its often a warning sign , get into more interesting work or sectors of the job requiring more than just the ability to steer and you might find a different type.
Interesting that it’s often third or fourth career drivers seem to find so much wrong in lorry driving, the same goes for some who have since left lorry driving and gone on to other (better they say) things, some with airs of superiority yet still hanging around us uneducated plebs, not saying thats the case here…superiority not the uneducated bit

No superiority complex issues here Juddian, I have enjoyed lorry driving for many years before this new venture. All I am saying is that I got low with the job towards the end and was ready for a change. I absolutely love what I am doing now but at the end of the day I am still a driver. Doesn’t matter to me what I drive as long as I am happy and as far as my post goes, I have noticed the differences although I have never witnessed anyone with a superiority complex. If that were the case I would be offended myself as I too drove class1 for many years. There may be other drivers on here in a similar situation as me who want a change too, I am just highlighting how it is for me and could be the same for anyone. Hope that clears up the superiority bit, I was always brought up to respect everyone but not to take ■■■■ from anyone at the same time. In my previous job to driving I was in a high pressure job after leaving Uni and it caused me to have a nervous breakdown. Driving was my saviour and salvation so I am the last person to have any superior issues.
I started driving trucks in 1991, by choice, after deciding that that’s what I wanted to do. Pay for my licence and all that. Very happy, did what I wanted to do. Then, for reasons I don’t need to get into now, I ended up driving busses…
It didn’t save the relationship, and I hated every moment dealing with the cargo. Don’t get me wrong, I liked driving the bus, could get used to being home every night, but by jove, the cargo… I hated dealing with people. I’m not a people person. And that’s why I like driving trucks, and I know that’s why most drivers like driving trucks. You don’t have to deal with other people most of the time…
switchlogic:
Never thought about this before but you are absolutely right. Go to any coach park with several coaches from same company, and sometimes not, you’ll find them all empty most of time as they are on one coach socialising with each other. People often ask me which is the better job, truck driving or coach driving and I always answer looking at it dispassionately it’s coach driving, by quite a way. I drove trucks because it was my childhood dream.
Childhood dreams and ambitions sometimes can have a lot to answer for. However I suspect in your case that your reality turned out to suit you well. You certainly have put your all into lorry driving and I suspect that you have helped out future lorry drivers through both your passion and videos. In my opinion this is exactly what I have found so far in Coach driving, people like you that care about the job and are enthusiastic and go that extra step to help you out. I have not found a single coach driver yet who is as some have explained on here although I don’t doubt it. In my 7 weeks of coach driving I have rekindled my passion for driving again and can now truly feel the spirit of it all once again in the sense of freedom on the road. One real surprise here was I did not realise that you had driven coaches before but once again my suspicion is that you would have been a good one through your personality and driving skills.
Thank you kindly! I’ve had a fantastic career so far, wouldn’t change a single minute of it, even the bad stuff. When I started out the age you could take your test was 21 so I had some years to fill, which I did with the local bus company. Then onto coaches while constantly being turned down for HGV jobs, got to me at the time but in hindsight I’m glad I didn’t get a truck driving job sooner as I had a great time bouncing all over Europe on coaches, from Norwegian Fjords in the north to Budapest in east and Rome in south, loved it all. But then my outlook is there’s good in everything if you want to find it, even my lowly job now driving a parcel van
Some interesting theories around. It boils down to the fact we are all human as someone said. Good and bad with lorry and coach drivers. I met some great guys whilst on the road a couple of who I still keep in touch with. Someone mentioned waving to each other, that happened on petrol tankers in London and I have seen buses doing the same. Motorcyclists used to do the same but in latter years most of that seems to have disappeared as well.
However, as I said earlier everything has changed and not for the better. People are definitely less sociable, more aggressive and dare I say it driving standards are a lot worse than they used to be. Unfortunately I can’t see it ever getting better again.
Thank goodness I’m old and retired.

Apology accepted,
so my whole point of this post was to merely point out what you have just said above with the difference of the fact that I have found that it isnt as bad with coach drivers. I have travelled up and down the country visiting lots of places and had many chats with other coach drivers and have found them all to be extremely helpful and pleasant. I didn’t say that all lorry drivers were ignorant but in general a coach driver appears to be more friendly and more sociable as every single one I have met has been like this. Also on driving skills I would say they have much better standards of driving because we carry passengers and not goods so your driving has to be much smoother and you have to be more alert for braking etc. It is my observation through driving both types of vehicle. Nothing more sinister than that.

I completely get what you are saying, I had the same reservations as yourself as far as people go. I will say this though, I had done a bit of service bus work and coach driving is the complete opposite to normal buses, the passengers on normal service buses can be a nightmare and not easy to deal with whereas coach passengers are usually happy and excited going away on holiday or day trips. They are much more pleasant to deal with, they all say please and thankyou and are in general very appreciative towards you. Don’t let service buses experience deter you as they are worlds apart. Coaches are also very luxurious and it is a pleasure to drive them.

Was not aware I had apologised however if you are happy then so am I. Think I deserved an apology after the abuse you gave me but I’ll take it because I know I go OTT and off on a tangent sometimes.
Got to say I think you have been very lucky with the guys you have met, all being sociable and all a good standard of driving. Have you actually been out with them and seen their driving? or do they tell you how good they are like 99% of drivers.
Obviously don’t drive for a living anymore but I do regular trips from Holland to London to Scotland with a van and trailer and back and see some really atrocious driving along the way.
I can almost accept it from the car and van drivers but when I see lorries and coaches being driven dangerously it really disappoints me as they should know better.
All these pile ups recently but they still travel nose to tail. I know probably most don’t do it (and I’m sure you don’t) but some coach drivers are habitual tailgaters as are some LGV’S.
These types need to be removed for public safety.

I can only say what I have seen, there may well be some bad coach drivers about but I have yet to witness that. Driving people around is totally different to driving with only yourself in the cab. I take my cargo as precious as most of these people are old and do not want to be on a white knuckle ride, they pay for these holidays expecting a good driver. Would you like your elderly mother or father to be on a coach tearing about and driving badly? I drive like I have my own parents on board, everything is slowed down and smooth having patience at junctions, roundabouts etc. It is a totally different style of driving to HGV. My HGV days were never like I drive now. Acceleration, speed and distance from other vehicles is paramount for driving safely. I take it seriously and hope every coach driver does the same.
I’m afraid I have to agree with jake.I’ve been retired 8 years and the standard of driving from professionals is getting visibly worse. In 47 years LGV driving I never had a court conviction or spot fine for any offence apart from 500 pesetas for not having a stamp on a Spanish permit. One moving traffic accident found innocent.Almost all my driving now is by car between Yorkshire and Spain and I can confidently say that driving in the UK is a nightmare for several reasons.I recaall years ago a French president (Giscard d’Estaing) bemoan the fact that the French did not drive as serenely as the Brits. That certainly no longer applies in my opinion.
I get what you mean about all these HGV drivers boasting about their continental work.
So, tell me more about these skiing trips to the Alps you’re going to be doing next year…

Haha, tbh I’m half thinking of taking your diaries as an inspiration! This sort of work on a part time basis, might suit me, nearing the end of my working contributions.

A great way to work, lots of drivers do coach work part time, I most certainly will go part time when I retire. Although to be honest with you, I feel like I have retired working full time

I am surprised. You seem to forget that I drove coaches as well but only latterly and minimally compared with trucks. I treated my passengers just the same as you but I must say I drove to the same standard when driving trucks. Why should it be any different. A wagon weighing over 40 T can do as much if not more damage than a loaded bus.
I really am surprised at all these great drivers you see, and never any bad ones. You do drive in the UK? Perception can vary of course. Stay safe.
