It’s 20 days paid holiday, so if you book 4 off then those days off are paid as if you’d worked them, and deducted from your year’s entitlement accordingly.
Imagine this:
off off off off on on on on off off off off (normal 12 day period)
off off off off hol hol hol hol off off off off (holiday 12 day period)
In both cases you’d be paid the same on the next payday, because those 4 days holiday are simply deducted from your holiday entitlement, and paid.

What parts are you unhappy with?
It’s mainly the thought of working a weekend for “normal” rates which goes against everything I’ve ever done (military excepted), plus it will seem forever before you get a full weekend off.

That is the fly in the ointment, I agree, and that’s the price paid to have 4 days off in every 8 (which is a price worth paying in my opinion). I’ve found after a while you get so used to it that Saturdays don’t feel like Saturdays anymore. They feel like any other working day. But I’ve no family, so it works for me.

I agree with that as I love my football and cricket so I’d miss quite a bit of both. However for someone with kids it’s great as they get to spend more time with them, also take them to school pick them up and when the kids are off on holidays even better.
That is of course the kids don’t get under your feet
If you can get a trucking company that does 4on/4off but a 2dayshift/2nightshift cycle I can confirm from previous experience outside of trucking that that is the best shift going.
Think about it you only work HALF the year all be it prob 12hr+ shifts each time!!!

What i can tell you is,a few drivers left Walkers Crisps to go to Maritime at Bardon, Leics. One as i know of is back at Walkers within a couple of months, others want to get back. They said the job is crap. They are push push push, though limited to 52mph. Check it well before you commit. In the mean time i will try to find out more. as i retired from Walkers just over a year ago after 46years of Class 1.

If you include holidays, you’re only working 5.3 months of the year.

To be fair, that’s a good wage. £170 for 12 hours = £14.17 per hour including breaks.
I wouldn’t care if it was 15s and 13s as its only 4 days then 4 days off.
Whats the overtime rate ?
If it was a 13, 14, or 15 hour shift you’d get overtime after 12 hours. If it’s a 7 hour shift, you’re guaranteed 12 hours (£170).
The only snag is the overtime rate, it’s about £13.50 p/h Sat, about £14.50 p/h Sun, and I think during the week it’s little better than flat rate. I have to clarify these though.
Basically if you work on average 64 hours per week and keep revs ‘green’ you’d make around £40k pre-tax.
28 days holidays at £640 per week.
It’s not the easiest trucking job in the world, can be challenging, but I sorta prefer that to doing boring stuff day in day out. To each his own. Some love it, some hate it, usual stuff as with most jobs out there.
Money is fine, but that’s relevant to your expectations, I know some guys are pulling in around £1k per week mostly trunking via LTD and complain that’s low and at the same time there are guys that do tramping on books and take home around £470 a week, yet they are fine with that. When it comes to money it’s a personal thing and all will view it differently.
