There is that but not all companies tell the truth, and the more complicated the pay scheme the more they can big it up.

One car transporter mob i was unfortunate enough to work for would fill a hopeful’s ears with all sorts of waffle, tell them what they want to hear syndrome like bloody lying politicians.
The reality for the few who took the job and lasted beyond a few days weeks months was anything down to half what they had been led to believe they would earn, with oblique references to the blue eyed’s peak earnings.

That place opened my eyes, i’d seen how wages could vary cos i’d been on percentage on my first artic job, plus me ugly mug has seldom fitted, hence not been one of the blue eyed’s, but that lot, the personel bod mainly, took the ■■■■.

Complicated pay favours the employer. I am a new pass who starts in a few weeks with a direct employer on day rate with a small fuel bonus and night out money as and when. Not spectacular but as a new pass I am happy with it and I know what I will earn.

Another serious option was temp to perm through an agency on a low basic, meal allowance, fuel bonus, and an extra based on what and where delivered. Different days even paid different rates depending on pattern. It wouldn’t even fit the whole spreadsheet on the screen.

I don’t doubt that there are some who could earn good money but knowing if you were ever being paid right would be near impossible

You could always work the car money out, but the planner could stitch you up something rotten.

Several times in succession i’d get a multi drop on a friday which would take me up till about 3 pm say, then a second load which would often be 7 renters from a just outside London site into one of the central sites, yes on Friday afternoon, that second job being only usually 7 cars would pay me the sum total of £3.50, no accumulated bonuses, no mileage, and could easily take 4 hours.
Poacher turned gamekeeper TM there would sack you instantly for refusing a job.

I found a much better job and moved on in short order.

Funny how what goes around come around though, that same planner tried to get on driving where me and few others had moved to, i didn’t queer his pitch but two other ex transporter lads who he thought were his big mates did    , they told the TM if he started we’d all leave, he never did get in and to this day thinks it was me who shafted him, i haven’t put him right :sunglasses:

I was told £120 a shift over the phone. Never accepted a further interview.

Judian, you are definitely one if the most sensible posters on here, say it like it is in the real world.
There is no better pay system in this industry than clear pay per hour, or say weekly pay for a set amount of hours and over time on top. Everything else is just hide the poor pay driver gets for the hours he is required to work/be available at work.

I agree Hkloss you know where you are with hourly, though having to work 50 hours basic (excl breaks) before you get another £2 or whatever an hour, and no extra for earlies/lates is a bugger, plus OT being calculated weekly not daily is another bit they’ve conned the drivers with, but overall straight hourly rate is probably the best bet for hire and reward, easy to compare jobs too.

Salary works well where i am, on own account, they don’t want us rushing round like our arses are alight, and don’t generally take the ■■■■ (though if the customer need servicing and you’re there, you are going out again to do it), we can do OT if we want, on rest days.

All in all lads, i’ve had the ■■■■ taken out of me as much as anyone over the early years, the devil is the fine print so when discussing jobs at interview stage make sure you know the ins and outs of the cats arse, cos they will tell you anything to get you on board when they need bodies, their blanket ‘you can earn £45k here lad’ means absolutely bugger all until you know exactly how thats made up and what happens when things don’t go right.

Only thing I know was that the pay was £110 per shift for 5 days on 3 off at there Tamworth depot in 2016.

Didn’t take the role myself as the driver assessor gave me the impression that the job wasn’t as good as the interviewer had made out.

I could of been wrong though… let us know what they offer you sir.

It’s usually £150 a shift days, £170 a shift nights + hourly pay after 12 hours.

However, I think Doncaster depot work the IKEA contract so a different rate could apply.

More pay packages than you can shake a stick at, so i’d just enquire direct.

I agree with rob, just enquiring direct.

£150 a shift for days plus OT after 12 hours (if calculated on a daily basis so they don’t give you a short shift to claw back OT :bulb: ) is a decent rate.

Good for you mate, best of luck.

Just check that any OT can’t be clawed back and/or that the 12 hours is guaranteed, ie you could do 4 hours OT over saturday and sunday at whatever the rate is, only for them to give you a 8 hour shift on the last day leaving you not only ■■■■■■ off but well out of pocket.
