can anyone give me any tips on map reading, I’ve started driving but the map thing is confusing me a bit!!!
When you are at home pick random place names and plan routes from one to another when you don’t have the pressure of finding your way in a wagon. the more you do the better geographical knowledge you will have and your understanding of main arterial routes will pick up too.
Get a Satnav, alot easier and it wont rip!
got a satnav but the bl@@dy thing keeps sending me down the most awkward small roads it can find!!!

It’s a poor workman who blames his tools
You need a severe dose of COFFEE!!
ok you have satnav but you should be able to read a map as these skills do come in very handy when using the browse map function
also if its taking you down small roads this is when the map reading skill comes in if it looks dodgey then don’t go down it stop use browse map and plan another way in also the set up may be wrong if you have it set to shortest route then change it to fasterst or if using tomtom then use the limited speed option in the route planning options
Hi Griz, what sat nav do you have?
I have been using a TOM TOM and like you, at first it would send me down stupid roads, until I found the " Avoid part of route feature" use this to remove any B roads or such like and you shouldnt have to many problems. I also check my route it gives me with my truckers atlas - to check for low bridges etc. As a rule stick to Blue , red and green roads on your map to get you as close to your destination as possible.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again - the SatNav is not the law, you don’t have to follow the instructions, you can ignore them.
If you get your old fashioned, Luddite map out and plan a route to your destination, what do you do if you get to a turning you have chosen to take and it doesn’t look right, for whatever reason? Do you say to yourself, No, No I can’t go another way, I must take this road because I chose it as part of my planning? No, of course you don’t, you re-plan. Well use a SatNav the same way.
A SatNav is just a map, albeit one that talks to you and does the rerouting for you, but it is still just a map. A map that takes up less space than dozens of tatty A-Z’s, but it is still just a map. Laboured the point enough do you think?
Print out a little sticker and stick it on your TomTom (oooeerr missus ) to remind you it is just a map and you will soon be getting to places without using unsuitable roads. You will be able to find anywhere you need to get to, well unless it isn’t in the SatNav and you have to phone directory enquiries.
Here’s a little snippet for those of you who hate SatNav’s. The spell checker doesn’t like SatNav and wants to change it to Satan.

Its not far wrong as far as destinator is concerned.

Or NAVMAN - was with a driver a while ago who followed the route that suggested out of Leicester and we must have doubled back on ourselves twice, all back roads - absolutely bonkers… … …
TOMTOM isn’t perfect but is a lot better than that… and lighter than a bag of A-Z’s !!

So why did he follow it if it was using back roads? Sounds like he is just using it straight out of the box and hasn’t set it up.
A couple of weeks ago, my Navman guided me from the M1 to Evington Valley Road in Leicester, and back again without using any back roads.
Taking the subject slightly off topic as usual, I had the misfortune of a passenger a couple of weeks ago.
A new driver who went for an interview and training with our company was sussed out.
He couldnt read or write, he couldnt read a map and was very disgruntled when they sent him home still unemployed.
He told them that if he was stuck, he would ring his wife and she could explain his instructions to him
As he couldnt read “Tunnel sous la manche” I doubt it would have been a good idea to send him to Bulgaria
So why did he follow it if it was using back roads? Wink Very Happy Sounds like he is just using it straight out of the box and hasn’t set it up. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes
He followed it because he was a complete spanner - what I found funny was that he was impressed by it afterwards… … … Even though we crossed two roads that would have taken us out of there a lot faster !!!
You are right though - it was the first time he had used it in anger and was purposely following the route, since I was a passenger I wasn’t too bothered … …
release software is fine try runnig the stuff i run do
thanx for the advice folks, i was looking at my tom tom and was wondering what difference it makes by using the limited speed function
on a proper map north is at the top of the page therefore west is on the left of it
set your tom tom so it shows the compass
read the front of the map so you know what all the symbols on it mean
as coffee has said tom tom is only a map
your apprenticeship in lorry driving should include map reading
plan a route using a paper map then see if your sat nav will send you the same way
try doing a dummy run near to home maybe home to Ae, Parkgate then to Dalfibble
Never had a problem with maps. Got a whacking great holdall full of the blighters just in case.
For the last week I’ve been working for a place over in ■■■■■■■■■■■ that does home deliverys that has sat nav in all their motors and I can’t see what the attraction for them is.
.
I was finding them using a map and getting to them quicker than the porter who was using the sat nav

Don’t need a whacking great holdall for SatNav. That is one of my main likes about SatNav over maps.
