Manual entry query

Had to take my driver card out yesterday for about two hours at the time I took it out I had it on rest, when I put back in then I didn’t do a manual entry is this ok?? Or shall I just write on a scrap price now why it was out■■? I got a rough idea of between the times it was out just not exact.

Why did you have to take it out and what were you doing in them 2 hours ?

Tachograph was being calibrated so had to take it out. So basically just sitting in garage waiting.

wouldn’t worry you weren’t doing hard labour etc , just watching tv and drinking coffee

Haha great so I don’t need to keep a record that’s all I was worried about. Another query for you  Any good free apps for iPhone for route planning? Few times this week my satnav will only get me nearish destination but doesn’t get me to exact point and tries sending me down small streets.Any decent apps for HGVs about that I can actually look at where I’m looking for??

Yes you should have done an entry for the time spent out of the machine. But it doesn’t necessarily mean you have to do it by putting the entry into the tachograph. It would be perfectly acceptable to do a 24 hour print out for the day at the end of your shift and write on the back the reason why. This would have added benefit of having the exact times you pulled and entered you card pre printed for you! Hand one copy in with your down load and keep one for yourself.

As for the Sat Nav, if you are following it to the point it is leading you to, without checking if that point is the ACTUAL address, then you are not planning your routes properly and just blindly following a sat nav. This is a sure fire way of ending up as picture in the news, with a hundred comments from readers saying, “idiot!” Or “HGVs should be replaced by rail!”

Just as an FYI, when I say planning your route, I don’t mean getting a paper map out necessarily(sometimes it is needed) but I mean checking the end point actually on your sat nav, scrolling along each way point so you understand what you are going to be doing on your journey ahead. Most importantly checking that post code actually takes you to the physical address. My HGV sat nav is very fond of dropping me one street away or just round the corner. But you can zoom out on the route planning mode and still be able to read the surrounding street names.

What I’m trying to say is your sat nav is probably perfect adequate, you are just not getting the best out of it, or worse, using it wrong.

Re: The manual entry again.

If your were stopped in 27 days time and the DVSA bod asks you what you were doing for 2 hours in the middle of the day 27 days ago, believe me its very difficult to remember when you are on the spot! And the worst thing you can say is “Eeeerrrrrr I don’t really know”…

But as I said a print out will do fine, and you can do it next time you get any truck too.

Sometimes it comes up in satnav as current street so like you said it sends me nearest address. I’ve just downloaded google maps app and streetview now to help checkout addresses. I haven’t done a print out for yesterday , is it possible to do a print out of yesterday’s work when I go in Monday and if so how■■? Thanks for the pointers it’s appreciated.

Yes.

Put your card in. Enter the menu, enter the print section, print card 24hrs, and then scroll back to the date you require. Repeat. Write on the back of both copies and sign them.

Too many drivers think they will end the world by having a fiddle the tachograph machine on a bit of down time. Stay away from the mode switch, and have a scroll through all the menus and options, you’ll be surprised how intuitive it is once you get in to it. You’ll have to change the local time on after this weekend, and there will be scores of drivers who just leave it as they are too scared to touch the Dragon Box over their heads… Don’t be that guy!

Nice one mate il do that as soon as my card is in Monday morning.I went to printout yesterday but it was empty. So I put a new roll in and then wernt sure about going through the menus! All about learning as a newbie. I’m guessing putting the clock back is not hard either then??

Edit :- Just looked on YouTube simple enough!!

Don’t be afraid of it! A tachograph is a tool, for you to manipulate and use, to help you through your day.

Yes changing the local time is easy. Changing the UTC time is easy, if its slightly wrong (you don’t need to do that after the clocks change fyi). Its just changing a setting. But you wouldn’t think so, the number of “drivers” who just leave it for others.

I’m fully expecting to have to change the local time on our artic when it comes down on Monday, and any of our other trucks that load out of St Albans too :unamused:
