As a driver you must account for your activities everyday so yes is the answer to your question.

Legally you should do manual entries for any activities that are not recorded automatically on the tachograph, for the vast majority of drivers this would mean doing manual entries on a daily basis as most of us have to spend some time collecting keys or doing paperwork before getting to the vehicle.
oh bugger i have never done one as all i thought we had to do is stick to our 9 / 10 hrs per day oops ill have to ask about that then on how to do one oops cheers
thanks tachograph and essexboy dont think vosa will like me then for not doing them will i be fined for not doing this or isnt it a infringment■■?
Humph, last time I did a manual entry it was on one of the new generation tachos in a 62 plate Merc, made a right cats bum of it, ended up showing that i hadn’t had a rest for 27 hours… so in future I reckon that for the 5 or 10 minutes it takes to get your keys and paperwork VOSA shouldn’t be all that bothered…
BUT on the other hand, if you’re gonna be sat waiting for a vehicle, then perhaps you should do a manual entry.
In what circumstances?
If you’ve been working away from a vehicle and not had a tachograph in then go and drive you should put a manual entry in for the time. If like some jobs you only drive the truck on odd occasions then putting a manual entry is a pain. According to the nice email I got from VOSA, you need to record any weeks work where you drive a vehicle needing a tachograph.
Some here will say you have to record them on tacho print out or tacho disc, but VOSA stated in the email it can be in a diary or worksheet, just as long as it’s recorded.

If you start doing the manual entries now I doubt VOSA would be too bothered, especially if you don’t tell them

Like Trucktone said I’d hardly be worried about not recording getting keys and paperwork, unless there was a major delay like a jack knifed forklift on the way to the transport office. I doubt VOSA would be to fussed either, they like to see a bot of other work for vehicle checks though, but you’d have your card in by then.
What exactly is your job are you a full time driver? as you seem pretty clueless on the subject of tacho regs if you’re only worried about 9/10 hours. or you’re having a wind-up.
my truck is all loaded for me on a monday morning and my paperwork is in the cab i have my own set of keys so there is no waiting only the 15mins requirement to spend doing my vehicle checks thanks guys

im a full time new driver you may have 30yrs behind you i passed in july this year so yes i am abit clueless
The start times must match up on your time sheet to the start time on the tacho, if not it may cause a problem on a road side check point.

Thought you might be a bit of a newbie, not a problem, we were all there once. If I were you I’d brush-up on Drivers Hours Regs, listening to other drivers, even Stobart drivers
will leave more confused than you are now.
I never seen anything from VOSA that says you must spend 15 minutes checking you vehicle, just that you should do daily checks.
i know what i need to know about driver hrs i wasnt asking that i was asking about manual entries thanks again to all who replied

Hmm, you tried it once and messed up so you gave up and stopped doing manual entries
I’ve no idea what you do but a lot of drivers will spend 10 or more minutes at the start and end of the shift working whilst the chart/card is out of the tachograph.
I doubt VOSA would be all that lenient about 15 or 20 minutes or more every day.
Assuming of course that a driver was daft enough to tell them about it

Good point though I’m not sure how they would see your time sheet, but to be honest, given that it only takes a minute or two to do manual entries I can’t really see any point in not doing them.

What if you dont have a time sheet? We dont use time sheets.
Last Friday I was told to be in for 8, card was in at at 7.15 so I bagged 45 mins overtime for taking a dump and having a brew

They can quite easily request a copy of your time sheet from your boss if they really want to.

So after my day off I have to do a manual entry to show I was shopping or giving the missus one, cannot find the mode symbol
