Just curious, if a manual entry is made, is it possible to distinguish it (either on printout, card or VU download) from an automatic entry?

You would do a manual entry for anything that was not automatically recorded by the tachograph, such as work done before or after inserting the card/chart into the tachograph.
You would generally need to do manual entries for time after taking the card out at the end of the previous shift, most drivers not on a night out would have to do some work after taking the cared out even if it’s only handing the keys into the office, at the start of the shift you would normally have to get the keys from the office and possibly do paperwork or wait for an available vehicle before inserting the card/chart so again a manual entry is required.
