Now call me a sceptic but Mrs BB and myself were returning home one night from visiting friends around the 22.30 time and as we were driving through the section from the M4 M5 interchange towards Cribbs the first 3 gantries were showing 60 mph even though motorway was dead, the next one unbelievably was showing 40 ffs and the last was saying 50, now one of these has the speed cameras fixed on it so have a guess which one it was !!
Now are the HA operators briefed secretly to try and create speeding tickets by playing games with the speed settings ? I’ve seen this occur on the managed section by Newport where the lowest speed setting on a gantry happens to be the one with the cameras on or am I reading too much into it !!
From what I’ve read they’re air pollution linked speed limits They’re being used to reduce fuel consumption and air quality.
“Sensors will report critical data every minute to deliver air quality predictions at a much higher resolution than previously, with the ability to determine how varying the speed limit can improve air quality in the local vicinity. Frequent modelling and prediction will enable the introduction of ‘air quality’ speed restrictions, only when necessary, in response to each predicted poor air quality event.”

I’ve thought the same bb but I’m reliably informed these gantries are set by sensors and not some dude sat in a chair watching a bank of screens. Learned that on a speed awareness course.
There’s another piece I read that the reduced air quality linked speed limits wont apply to BEV’s, I cant see how that’s going to work on congested motorways!!! I can see things getting worse or slower! France has just lost their court case in the European court of justice on air pollution & the UK is up next in court again, this will be the fourth time, they’ve lost the first three air pollution cases. airqualitynews.com/2019/11/20/w … pollution/

I wonder how much air pollution the new helicopter station puts out when they take off… could that affect the sensors in the gantries?
No that won’t affect them, I can’t understand why at night when traffic flow is light and constant yet there was 3 different speeds set on the gantries with the lowest speed set for the one with the cameras, skullduggery going on I’m sure of it.
I was told 60 + 50mph are changed automatically but for a limit to be set to 40 it has to be done manually.
I think the same as you BB, middle of the night empty road, limits appear on the gantry, and yes, the speed camera is on the 50 when the others are 60mph. Finally enough it’s quite common for the speed camera to be the last limit then it goes back to the GLF (go like f**k) sign.
Maybe it’s a conspiracy, maybe they were just left on from a heavy bit of traffic from earlier in the day. Who knows. One things is for sure, these random limits do generate income !
