Man TGX 26.440 Turbo

Noticed my Turbo Whistling on tickover yesterday, no loss of power (yet) 9 months old (still in warrantee) she’s done 98,000 km.

I know some on here say that it’s not necessary to ‘let her wind down’ like we used to do, but I always do & I let her tick over for a couple of minutes in the morning. But she is used occasionally on the night trunk & they drive her ‘Like they Stole Her’.
I’ve seen them flying in the yard at full throttle & almost screech to a halt with a fully loaded trailer shuddering behind !

Question is- is it on the way out or am I being a bit too sensitive to some of her noises ?

I would tilt the cab first to get a better idea where the noise is from there is a lot of pipework on that twin turbo engine , check the exhaust brake flap hasn’t sheared they are made of chocolate…

Funny you should mention that, we had an 11 plate 300+k on the clock & the exhaust flap got stuck down, it got recovered co’s they suspected the turbo & she obviously had no power.
I’m back near MK now so I’m gonna get the fitter to have a quick look when I’m back in the yard.

Exhaust brakes working ok,

Sure its not a belt idler or tensioner bearing going down?

After some thought, a bearing did come to mind, our resident fitter has had a listen & agrees that there is a whining noise that probably shouldn’t be there.
She was serviced last week (97,000ish) would you re’tension a belt during the checks ?
(That might explain the noise ?)
Maybe I’m am just being a bit too sensitive ?

Belt tensioners are spring loaded so dont need adjustment but are prone to bearing failure.

She’s out with someone else next week (he’s going to look after her) so we will see how she gets on.
Watch this space !

I had a similar problem with a MAN , turned out to be nothing more serious than a slack hose clip on the turbo to engine ducting system .

just done a water pump on one at 275k had a noise on it at start up and was weeping out the tell tale hole, belt driven pump you’ve also got the tensioner,2 idlers, air con ,alt, fuel drive on 1 belt.
