MAN TGM, Opinions Please

It’s looking likely I’m getting a MAN TGM 26t tipper soon, about 4 years old. It’s a manual 'box but only the 7litre 290bhp motor (could be a bit asthmatic), very low mileage and very basic (manual window winders etc). Euro 5 but no adblue is a bonus, and I suppose if it’s a bit slow it could be remapped or chipped to match the normal bhp for a 26tonner.
Any opinions or experiences appreciated.

Paid by the hour aren’t you ?
I ocassionally used to drive an FL7 8 wheeler it was about 17 years old , slow as hell but had character  I was gutted when the crankshaft broke on me , she had just got back to the yard too.
She was sent to FL heaven after that :sunglasses:

Just be happy plodding along :sunglasses: :grimacing:

I knew an od who ran an FL7 8wheeler, 245bhp. And I always got stuck behind him on hills.

If its not a Scania then it’s just not good enough!

I don’t get the Scania obsession. I’ve driven one and it was no better than any other 8w I’ve driven. There was no massive payload difference, it went no faster at 420 bhp than my Daf does and was no better off road.

if i had the choice of a brand new motor(bare in mind the work i do and it would be an 8x4 chassis) i’d pick a Scania or daf -probably pick the Scania as a first choice( although all the dafs I’ve had long term on this sort of work have been very good and plenty of space inside)-not a fan of Volvo, and the rest don’t cut it at all imho.
as for the 6x4 26 ton bracket, theyre all going to be gutless, but i’d be happy to drive a MAN tgm if it i had to-could be a lot worse(Iveco?) lol

I do. I like the brand & imo they have the best build quality, good dealer network, they are reliable, comfortable, practical & hold their value pretty well.

Fair comments, we have HTC Daf about two miles away from our yard and they’re always reliable for parts and advice. Not sure what we’ll do re the MAN for parts (we use a self employed fitter for maintenance) as the local MAN dealer (Cordwallis) have been useless for our Isuzu (they’re the dealers for them too).

If I’d have the choice of a new 6x4 I’d go for a Daf CF Construction with the 370. According to T and D though, to spec an auto is nearly £3k more than a manual. :open_mouth: For the mileage we do, I doubt we’d ever see a big enough fuel saving in one.

I drove a 07 Man 26t the other day, i found the steering wheel a bit big, had to go back to feeding the steering wheel, not much room for storage overhead trays a bit shallow, bit to much plastic in the cab, if i had to choice between a Daf or a Man i would choose Daf to be honest, this is coming from a Volvo chap.

I’ve drove on a 11 plate since new and like it to drive. Storage could be better but driving position and seating is excellent. BUT, my motor and he two others in the company have all had major engine problems. All use water, and egr valves, low pressure, high pressure intercoolers and charge coolers have been replaced numerous times and one had a full engine replacement. all of ours are the 340 engine without adblue. Be very carefull.

Apart from the comfortable part I agree - nowhere for the left foot on an R series and the seat isn’t really that comfy…
