man tga 430

hello all just been told i am working for samworth brothers tomorrow and i am driving a man tga 430 . what gearbox are in them and what are they like to drive hope to get some replies quick as early start !!!

Hi Matt

Havn’t driven for Samworth’s myself but from what I can gather they are all automatic.

I drove the TGA410 when I was at Bryans and it was a very easy truck to drive. If you do have a manual box it will probably be a “comfort shift” which basically means you have a little button on the side of the stick that operates the clutch. You only use your left leg for starting and stopping.

Once you get used to it it was brilliant. Going back to a Man F2000 after that was a real bummer

If it’s a manual I think it’ll be a 4 over 4 with splitter and “comfort shift”. Usual 4 speed, range change on the front of the gearstick, splitter on the left side and a little button on the right hand side which is the “comfort shift” button which you can use to change gear without the clutch should you want to - just hold it in while you change and you don’t need to do anything with the clutch or throttle, it does it all for you.

The other option is the auto which has a dial with 5 positions, N for neutral, D for drive, DM for drive manouver, R for reverse, RM for reverse manouver. Easy.

HTH,
Paul

Refuse to drive it on the grounds that it is cheap and nasty and you have a fear of heights

Refuse to drive it on the grounds that you havent been trained in how to do so safely!!!

Strange how hauliers will pay thousands for a unit but arent that fussed about whether who ever drives it actually knows how to drive it!!

If you owned a factory / business and invested thousands in a new machine for it, surely then you wouldnt let somebody loose on it without them being fully trained and able to operate it correctly!

Does an employers duty of care to its employees stop if the employer is an agency but the employee is actually working for another business?

Who has the responsibility for ensuring that the person driving the vehicle can actually operate the vehicle in a safe and competent manner?

Just a thought.

ultimately, the driver. i wont drive anything i dont know how to use. the usual is a quick run with the tractor solo with another driver

personally, i like the TGA. i would assume it will be a manual 4 over 4 as its a 430. the newer ones dont have a 430 listed with a D20 engine. no great loss though. i dont like autos
